‘Highly carcinogenic’ tyre toxins give electric car drivers a nasty surprise Scientists grow increasingly concerned over release of harmful petrochemicals

Drivers of electric cars are unwittingly releasing more toxic tyre particles into the air than those driving petrol vehicles, experts have warned.

Scientists, analysts and regulators are growing increasingly concerned about the amount of potentially harmful tiny particles coming off tyres, especially those from heavier cars such as electric vehicles, due to the number of toxic petrochemicals that they are made from.

This comes as the Government is attempting to reduce carbon emissions under its “net zero” drive by encoruaging drivers to use electric cars. Motorists with older petrol vehicles in London also face fresh charges to enter Sadiq Khan’s Ultra-low emission zone (Ulez), which is expanding to cover all London boroughs from August.

Ministers have also been considering a “tyre tax” to cut harmful emissions.

However, experts have warned that non-exhaust pollution will rise when more electric cars are on the road.

Professor Roy M. Harrison, at the School of Geography, Earth & Environmental Sciences at the University of Birmingham, said: “The non-exhaust emissions from road traffic in developed countries now exceed the exhaust emissions, so that is a problem. And it's a problem that will get slightly worse as we go into a battery electric fleet and also as traffic volumes probably increase additionally.”

Considering that EVs are lucky to make 20,000 miles on a set of tires, it does make sense to me that the rubber is going somewhere.

I spent some time considering an e-car, and considered tires.

Too much of my life I could not afford good tires, but for the past 15 years today after I started buying Pilot sports and dws-06 tires I will only buy top tier tires.

There are always exceptions and there are actually some decent cheap mid-tier tires out there, but research time is money too.

regardless, ev tires are super expensive, just go to tire rack or discount tires and say you want tesla tires.

they are about $300 each, so with mounting and tax, $1500

I don’t know about wear, but the Tesla that parked next to me today had it’s tires on the wear bars. (and yes I do notice these things)

No problem. I’m sure they will figure out a way to levitate these cars sometime soon. Of course, the strong electromagnetic field necessary to levitate the car will probably kill you.

1960’s - 1970’s, left-wing-nuts decried “science” because “science” created “man’s inhumanity towards man, war machines.”

Next, coal, deemed to be “bad” by left-wing “science” and the cause of a variety of problems, was maligned. So, electrical power generation industrials’ efforts worked toward using natural gas.

Next, natural gas was deemed “bad” by Barack H. Obama, and just like that, electrical power generation industrials working from coal to natural gas, were stumped. And the left-wing-nuts again reversed themselves, by pushing for nuclear power generation (that they had opposed back in the 1960’s and 1970’s).

Next, methane rocketed past natural gas, as left-wing “science” freaked out when they discovered that animals pass gas, and the left (egs. John Kerry) demands that farm livestock be erased along with private, family farms and farmers, who, btw, work hard to feed . . . everybody.

Which gets us back to “dirty” ol’ coal that will probably end up being used again for electrical power generation, because using coal in a power plant that is designed to limit carbon emissions, will turn out to be the lesser problem - given the lessons learned by being threatened by the next, and the next panic of the left.

PS. Carbon black is used in car tires.
Carbon black is a byproduct of the combustion of various petroleum products. When added as a filler in rubber, it increases abrasion resistance and tensile strength significantly - which helps lead to a long-wearing tire.

My little EV eats tires... the regenerative breaking eats em up.

I wonder, are EVs more likely to “burn rubber” as they can typically accelerate from a dead stop much faster than average ICE-vehicles?

Seriously, the tires only last 20K?

FYI, that’s what actually good sticky first-tier tires cost for any vehicle on average these days. The tires for my now-dead 2000 Toyota 4Runner ran about that much and so will the ones for my new-to-me 2002 Toyota Sequoia.

Crappy all-season no-traction tires are considerably less.

Depends on what tire you fit. If you fitted Michelin Pilot Sports or better, yes, they last 20k. But then, those same tires last the same 20K if you put them on a Mustang. Stickier tires = better grip = lower lifespan as a general rule, especially with car tires that are lower profile and have lower initial tread depth.

Since buying my first set of Pilot Sports, I’ve owned nothing else. Michelin is the absolute best. On the other hand, the last set of Goodyear tires that I bought, Eagle F1 All Seasons, were hands down the worst tires I’ve ever experienced by a mile. For the first few (and I do mean few) thousand miles they had incredible grip, but then they took a turn for the worst and suddenly became the roughest riding tires I’ve ever seen. No exaggeration, it felt like riding on wooden wagon wheels. They were horrible. Goodyear is barely a shadow of what they once were.

Upcoming headline - “Pres. Biden announces plan to cut non-exhaust pollution by 25% by 2025.” The plan includes restricting all new vehicles sold in the US to be equipped with no more three tires. Also, all tires manufactured after 2025 must be constructed using a minimum of 25% black licorice.

Also EV's dont carry a spare tire

1. weight of tire and rim is about 75lbs

2. jack adds another 2 lbs

3. What driver could lift a 75 lb tire,,,?

4. Added weight of spare tire and jack reduces mileage range

5....and the kicker.....Jack under the wrong place and puncture the battery compartment.
