Burning trash for the planet? Climate cash sets off branding frenzy.
The Washington Post via MSN ^ | May 29, 2023 | by Evan Halper

The trash burning industry was eager to show it is not a polluting relic but a pioneering clean tech sector worthy of millions of dollars in new federal subsidies.

As the Biden administration allocates billions of dollars in new climate subsidies, environmentally challenged industries are sharpening their green pitches. The companies argue they are just as entitled to lucrative federal incentives as solar farms or electric carmakers, and are working to frame their businesses as global warming solutions. The money up for grabs from the Inflation Reduction Act and other programs are in amounts large enough to guide whether they thrive or go the way of leaded gasoline and asbestos.

Waste-to-energy was originally seen as a solution to mountains of waste in landfills across the country. Of course it produces CO2 but when conceived, nobody cared about that. Another display of the incoherence of the “green” people.

The Compost reads like there is nothing wrong about corporate welfare other than some are not getting their fair share - so wrong on so many levels.

I think burning trash is brilliant, still.

Worked on a project at Dyess AFB in 2006. We installed/piped in back-up diesel tanks/generators for Holt Cat. These generators were tied into trash burning generators with massive exhaust filters.

Good idea.

Hell, catalytic converters were advertised as turning carbon monoxide into safe carbon dioxide. How times change.

Totally agree. I never thought it was ok for the government to take taxpayer money and dole it out to companies and “start-ups” like it was just free money (not loans). They can pick and choose who can get that piece of the pie. Our hard earned money should be paid to the government for limited purposes like law enforcement, border protection and services such as fire/rescue, street repair and etc. I don’t even think it was intended for us to pay the salary, protection, travel and all the rest of what our Congress get. Oh and don’t get me started on the foreign countries that we help support.

Wheelabrator Industries operates multiple plants that burn trash to create electricity. All my trash from my house in southern NH goes there. With the exception of construction debris and household furniture/carpets, etc.. We actually recycle steel/tin, cardboard, glass, aluminum, mixed clean paper/newspaper and clear plastic bottles.

These recycled items are pulled out of the waste stream because the all have a value that costs less/ton to haul away than the mixed trash. Aluminum and steel are money makers. Meaning we get paid more than the trucking cost.

The most expensive stuff to get rid of is construction debris. Things like old shingles, drywall, etc have to go to a special landfill that cost more than the regular land fill.

All the regular plastic (not clear, #2, colored plastics) get burned in the regular trash because nobody wants them.

In most major cities on the East Coast, office buildings burn their trash at approximately 0500 in the morning, just before sunup so the smoke is not visible to the public. These office buildings have major incinerators on there rooftops. This has been happening for years and the Climate Changers never mention it. Tons of paper is burned each morning before sunup.

My mid-NH recycle center posts the actual dollar figures over the various bins.

I think CORRUGATED cardboard is another money-maker.

Cardboard could also be a money maker for my town too.
I have not been directly involved with the transfer station for a few years. I just know it is worth pulling out. We are probably farther away from the card board paper plant than you.
However, I know that cardboard is now the largest volume of anything in the trash stream. We have two revolving containers on site. Where we only have one for everything else.

We really need a compactor for our aluminum cans. The dumpster they go in fills up with volume way before is does in weight. Same story with the container for mixed glass.

Back when Aluminum was around $4/lb my former towns transfer station was getting almost $25K for a full 25-30’ dumpster. It would take six months to fill it up. This was about 12-15 years ago.
