Former Texas secretary of state sworn in as interim attorney general

Five days after the Texas House voted to impeach Attorney General Ken Paxton, and after First Assistant Attorney General Brent Webster said he would lead the office in accordance with state statute, Gov. Greg Abbott appointed someone else to temporarily lead the office.

Abbott on Wednesday appointed and swore in former Texas Secretary of State John Scott as a short-term interim attorney general, citing his authority to do so under Article 15, Section 5 of the Texas Constitution.

He also issued a proclamation and in a letter to the current Secretary of State, former state Sen. Jane Nelson, said it was a “provisional appointment to serve as Attorney General until a decision in the impeachment trial of Warren Kenneth Paxton. Jr. is reached.”

“John Scott has the background and experience needed to step in as a short-term interim Attorney General during the time the Attorney General has been suspended from duty,” Abbott, a former Texas attorney general and former Texas Supreme Court justice, said in a statement. “He served under me in the Texas Attorney General’s Office and knows how the Office of the Attorney General operates.”

I believe it is a few weeks before the Texas Senate will be hearing the Paxton matter. However, given the number of GOP House members who voted for impeachment, I fear the "fix" may be in and Paxton will be convicted.

Paxton was a thorn in the side of both the democrats and the GOP establishment. Therefore, they teamed up to work together and remove him from office.

So Texas can stop embarrassing itself with all of those Supreme Court cases arguing states rights and other long neglected clauses in the Constitution.

These charges were floating out there before the last election, that Paxton handily won.

What ever happened to the concept of not overturning the will of the people?

I’m not so sure. The TX Senate is much more conservative than the TX House and Paxton will finally be allowed to defend himself. The fact that 6 members of his staff have taken leaves of absence to defend him speaks volumes to me regarding his innocence.

Not to mention that Paxton’s wife, who I guess he cheated on, is a state senator.

Ken Paxton is being railroaded, as almost all the “evidence” was made up by persons who had NOT be sworn in to get the anecdotal statements on the record, but by not swearing to an oath, they are not subject to perjury.

Pretty slick, if you are not obeying the letter of the law, as this kangaroo court known as the Texas House has chosen to do. Perhaps the Texas Senate is just about as corrupt.

I think this answers the question of why haven’t AGs and DAs from red states gone after high level democrats. The republican party won’t allow it.

What in God’s name are you talking about? Yes, you liked the AG’s politics, but he was a total slimeball! Cheating on his wife, selling his influence in exchange for a house remodel and campaign contribution, asking the legislature to pay his damages from getting sued, is that your idea of a lawyer representing the state?

Hello, it was a bipartisan effort, all except two voted to impeach. And your argument is basically bankrupt. Yes, most politicians are weasels, it’s just a matter of degree.

Full disclosure: I am no Karl Rove fan.

However, in the WSJ piece at the linl below, he lays out better than I have seen otherwise, the background behind the various charges against Paxton.

If those charges are true, real Conservatives should not cheer for Paxton, merely because he is/was so “popular”. Since when was “popular” synonomous with Conservative.

It appears that the great state of Texas has ceased to be “great”...

Is it becoming, like CA and AZ, merely an extension/territory of Mexico?

Abbott is a bit of a squish. He’s WAY closer to being Pence than he is Trump
