Fire at Louisiana oil tank farm prompts shelter-in-place and evacuations

Evacuations and shelter-in-place orders were in effect for residents and businesses around an oil industry tank farm in Louisiana after part of it erupted in flames Saturday, producing a plume near the Lake Charles area.

It wasn't clear what sparked the blaze at Calcasieu Refining Co. No injuries have been reported. The refinery did not answer phone calls seeking comment.

Mandatory evacuations were in effect for those as far as a 1.5 miles from the tank farm; outer boundaries of a shelter-in-place order have been reduced from 5 miles to 3 miles, according to the Lake Charles Fire Department.

In a statement, the fire department described the blaze as a "crude oil tank fire."

the article said...”a shelter-in-place order”

I suppose that would be dependent on where I was when the fire broke out ...
Don’t you think?

... and to yur point , less gas ... got to get those summer driving prices up some how.
We don’t want a bunch of rif raf just tooling around the country side un-monitored do we?

“The refinery did not answer phone calls seeking comment.”

Uh? They have evacuated the area. I assume that means the receptionist at the refinery as well.

Crude oil is not a single substance to picture.

There is thick and heavy crude. There is not so thick and not so heavy crude. Most is of this latter category.

Auto ignition about 400 degs F.

The mandatory evacuation and shelter-in-place for the Graywood
subdivision and the Big Lake Road area — put in place after an
oil tank caught fire at the Calcasieu Refining Company — have been
lifted. The order  — which had been in place since just before
2 p.m. Saturday — was lifted at about 6 a.m. Sunday. The original
shelter-in-place order was for a 5-mile radius around Calcasieu
Parish, according to the Calcasieu Office of Emergency Preparedness.
That was eventually reduced to a 3-mile radius, then a fourth-mile radius.
