The 2024 primary field grew to seven candidates with the most recent entrance of Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) but could swell to about ten candidates in the coming weeks, triggering Republican senators to worry about a rerun of the 2016 primary when the large field of candidates failed to establish enough support to overcome Trump’s solid share of the electorate to cruise to the nomination.
Before DeSantis entered the race on May 24, some Republicans speculated he would carve supporters away from Trump’s base, but polling on May 31 by Morning Consult revealed Trump still leads by 34 points over his closest potential competitor. Trump’s continued preeminence over the crowded field, including DeSantis, who many view as Trump’s biggest rival, appears to be attracting yet more GOP candidates into the race.
“A replay of 2016? Yeah,” Sen. John Cornyn (R-TX) told the Hill.
He continued:
A number of these people are in low single digits, so my hope would be that, if after a few months their numbers don’t get better, that they decide to drop out so that it becomes a two- or three-person race. I think that would be the best development, as far as I’m concerned.
But more, not fewer, candidates could enter the race in the coming weeks, strengthening Trump’s hand among a plethora of hopefuls, who include former Vice President Mike Pence, former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, Virginia Gov. Glenn Youngkin, and North Dakota Gov. Doug Burgum.
“That’s always a possibility when you have one candidate that has a loyal following that starts with a bigger base,” Senate GOP Whip

Lol, what does it matter? Their best performing “anyone but Trump” candidate is still getting crushed even in head-to-head polling. So the clown car’s impact is meaningless.
Donald Trump is going to handily get more than 50% of the Primary vote.
Whether he faces 1 opponent or 20 does not matter, they will simply be dividing up a pie amongst however many there are than combined can’t win the nomination.
Some prognosticators say that all of these people are really running for vice president.
But it is not a foregone conclusion that Trump would select one of his primary opponents as his running mate.
They are desperate. They can’t stand that the PEOPLE support Trump and NOT the deep state Republicans and Democrats.
Easily solved, Trump can drop out, endorse DeSantis, or simply go and spend time with his family.
Nobody is worried.
The GOP field is not running to win.
They are running to check the former presidential candidate box so they can make more appearance money and dollars per dish on Trump.
Hapless and helpless losers all.
Go Trump!
Exactly, just means they get a little bit more decision making by have choice of a few delegates. Why give DeSantis 20% of the say?
I like the interview pool for Trump’s VP.
LOLOL! Dream on dude - Trump will be the nominee
I’m not. Republicans will never again win an election. The process has been fully perverted.
Crowded Primary Field Trump grins.
A bunch of house mice heading toward the free cheese.
Easily solved, Trump can drop out, endorse DeSantis, or simply go and spend time with his family.
This. He already lost the last general election.
No reason to believe he won’t lose the next one.
Yes, this is similar to how the media does polls. You have one answer you want to show support for, then offer many options for those opposing your preference so the “anti” your position has many options to dilute the other side.
Trump needs someone loyal to him for VP. No one on this list qualifies. They’d all stab him in the back.
Qualified:
Ted Nugent
Kid Rock
Mike Lindell
maybe:
Kari Lake
And, not only will President Trump be the Republican Nominees, he will be POTUS 47!
Will see. It is very, 10 months to the first caucuses and primaries. Former Vice President Pence is now making his announcement. In past election cycles, a former VP would be leading candidate. He conservative, not my choice, but interesting to listen to. I also listened to Governor Doug Burgum make his announcement earlier today. Of course we’ve already got DeSantis (who I’m currently supporting), Christie, Scott, and others. Most are credible candidates, even if I don’t like some of their politics. We all know Trump who I’ve supported until recently since 2015. Anyway, lots of people to consider, lots of time, and my fervent hope is that here on FR we can keep it polite and constructive, not destructive as a couple people are already spamming FR with. Oh well, not likely.
He already lost the last general election.“
No he did not, “warrior”
That's one of the worst head fakes I think I've ever seen. You're not fooling anyone.
Herding cats is easier.
