Millions in US under air quality alerts as Canada wildfires rage
CNN ^ | Updated 1:36 PM ET, Wed June 7, 2023 | Adrienne Vogt and Aditi Sangal

More than 55 million people across the Northeast, Midwest and mid-Atlantic in the US are under air quality alerts as wildfire smoke originating from Canada shrouds major US cities.

Officials in Philadelphia urged residents to remain indoors and avoid strenuous activities outdoors, and public schools in New York City and Washington, DC, canceled outdoor activities due to poor air quality.

More than 9 million acres have been charred by wildfires in Canada so far this year — about 15 times the normal burned area for this point in the year.

You can track the wildfires and look up the air quality index in your city here.

It’s a fire. It does more good than harm.

Not for those of us with respiratory issues. I definitely noticed a difference yesterday and closed everything up.

Even in the woods here, yesterday and today smell a little like camp fire. The sun is a dull red and gives no heat.

Also adding to the issue is the unusual weather pattern. Here in Michigan the wind/weather is coming from the east, and will do that for some time. Normally the western pattern would take the smoke out to the ocean.

we know very well how to do a controlled burn in forest management - which stimulates new growth and lessens risk of this sort of event. however greenies are averse. i don’t know if any of this is arson. here in Cali firebugs are unleashed when we have a fire outbreak.

Ah, smog, dirt and pollution in the air - here in Pittsburgh it’s just like old times.

Wonder what ever happened to Michelle Madoff and her GASP group - great acronym - Group Against Smog and Pollution - but a real PIA - responsible for shutting down of lots of Pittsburgh industries.

It's very bad here in NYC. It looks eerie, like a partial eclipse of the sun is going on. You can smell the smoke in the streets!

Which is a nice change from smelling the bums in the streets.

Reminds me of camping. Puts me in the mood to put a frog's leg on a stick and hold it over the fire.

About forty five minutes west of me here in southern NJ is a rural community known as Jackson Township. This community abounds with horse farms, a lot of these animals are breed for the Meadow Lands Race Track , the Atlantic City and Freehold Raceway. These areas been having a series of large brush fires for two days now as well as a farm community known as Manchester NJ. It hasn't rained in a month here on The Jersey Shore and the brush around all these areas is dry as tinder.

All last night and the day before this whole area has been stinking of choking smoke. It even managed to stink up the ER in the hospital I work in for the last two days , so bad that respiratory patients had to be moved up to the fifth floor of the building. We sure need some rain out here. My wife is asthmatic and has to stay inside. She likes to garden but hasn't been able to go outside and her rose bushes are just about gone and the lawn is like straw.
