If there is ground fuel in some areas, it may be due to the large die off of ash due to the Emerald Ash Borer. I was visiting some friends in NY last week and was shocked at how many ash trees now have crown die-off in areas that showed no such effects five years ago.
It's just dry and several of these fire started due to lightning and also humans stupidly. There have been black flag alerts in Michigan, Northern Pennsylvania, etc due to dry conditions and strong winds.
If we don’t manage our forests, Mother Nature will.

Just spoke with my ex on the phone. She said the air in Connecticut is yellow and has a chemical taste.
I’m puzzled why Canada is burning and the US is not. Western Canada has twice as many fires as the Northeast, but western winds are blowing smoke north.
Probably the excessive rain in our west has delayed or prevented some fires, but that usually creates lots of underbrush and more fires.
And, unusually cool in AZ so far.....rarely over 100°.
I suspect Canada greenies are to blame.
My ex in the tri-state area (Ct.) just told me that it is so dark in NYC that the street lights came on in Central Park.
Hope the predicted rain shows up next week.

It arrived here at the Jersey Shore this afternoon. Looks like a yellowish fog right now. We’re keeping the windows closed.
Around 2PM it was dark enough in NYC to start triggering the lights to come one.

I thought all that sun blocking was supposed to heat the earth. That is NOT what is happening. I think the smoke is cooling things down.
We’re under Code Red tonight and tomorrow, even down here in the DC suburbs.
