Does wearing a mask protect you from Canadian wildfire smoke?
NY Post ^ | 06/07/2023 | Marc Lallanilla

As wildfires scorch Canada and smoke blankets the United States from Minnesota to New England and south to Florida, millions of people are under air-quality alerts.

Face masks — the same kind used in the COVID-19 pandemic — can help protect people from dangerously polluted air, say health experts.

But choose a good quality mask, they caution.

“N95 masks are the type of face covering protection that I would recommend for somebody who is outside during the air pollution caused by wildfires,” Marina Vance, PhD, an assistant professor in the environmental engineering program at the University of Colorado, Boulder, told Healthline.

Weather Channel radar shows rain showers blanketing the general Ottawa, Montreal, Quebec area and both half New England. Canada as source of wildfire smoke is not looking very plausible. Where exactly is the fire and smoke coming from?

The masks may block particles fairly well, but the fire vapors will get past the mask.

Wait for the wind direction to keep smoke out of your area before venturing out.

Also, forest fires have been around a long time. You generally die from them by being in them.

“More than 160 fires have been reported in Quebec including at least 114 that are out of control. More than 173,000 hectares have burned this year in Quebec’s “intensive protection fire zone” — the area where normally all fires are actively fought — compared with a 10-year average of 247 hectares as of the same date”

I can’t get this to work:

Canadian Wildland Fire Information System

The base map has overlays I can’t seem to make available.

YES, A DECENT MASK HELPS!!! Put on a real N95 mask or even a respirator. That will reduce the risk quite nicely. Use the smoke as an excuse to skip outdoor chores and exercise. We get air quality exactly like this EVERY YEAR here in Reno.

All New York is dealing with is the particles. They are not in the midst of fires, so no vapors, etc. This isn’t like running into a burning building, this is simply being downstream of the smoke and ash.

Yes. The fire caused dust particles drifting down from Canada are very large compard to the microscopic size of a viral droplet from the Covid virus. Masks like the N95 and masks worn by folks in home and industrial operations that generate wood or industrial dust should be fine for the fire caused dusty bad air.

Thank you. Looks like fires are generally south of rainy areas and swirl the smoke south/ eastward from the weather system behind it.

Figures the French would foul things up.

So . . . Wood Ash and Water makes Lye
are we gonna get washed clean from all of this?
Or just gonna kill the fishes?

(Yes I know ‘fish’ is plural for all of you with no sense of humour)
