Donald Trump’s Surprisingly Good Odds against the DOJ
National Review ^ | 6.9.23 | JIM GERAGHTY

On the menu today: No, the news isn’t in reruns; Donald Trump has been indicted again, this time over the classified documents at Mar-a-Lago. Interestingly, federal prosecutors are pursuing the case in south Florida, which is likely to be much friendlier territory for the former president than Manhattan or Washington, D.C. Are federal prosecutors way too overconfident about their ability to persuade a south Florida jury? Or do they have so much evidence and such a slam-dunk case that they’re confident they can win a conviction, even in the jurisdiction most likely to be sympathetic to Trump?

[cut]

The most interesting piece of reporting in the past 24 hours is by longtime Florida political reporter Marc Caputo over at The Messenger, who points out that by indicting Trump in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Florida, federal prosecutors are operating in a venue much more favorable to Trump than Washington, D.C., would be:

Former federal prosecutors and seasoned defense attorneys have this blunt advice: consider trying Trump elsewhere. South Florida, they say, is a hard place to get federal convictions against political figures and celebrities.

And Trump is both.

“I would absolutely try this case in Washington D.C.,” said Richard Gregorie, a former federal prosecutor in Miami who noted that Trump has far more support in South Florida than in the nation’s liberal capital city.

“People who operate in D.C. have no idea what it’s like down here. Prosecuting politicians is hard here,” he added. “The people are just suspicious of government all over South Florida.”

“You are assuming that Trump did not know he was being recorded.”

Yes, I am. In fact, I doubt the conversation (as transcribed) took place. But if it did, it is very likely that it has been highly edited and/or taken out of context.

The whole thing is purely an attempt to interfere with the 2024 election.

This has absolutely nothing to do with national security or justice.

And people are falling for it just like the Russia hoax.

People in government willing to use their office criminally and who have the backing of most of the judiciary and all of the MSM can only be stopped one way. Stop hoping for God or someone with authority to wave a wand and thwart this massive wave of criminality. Add in that here are places in this country where the deepstate could “convince” a “jury” that Donald Trump raped his daughter.

Once he was out of office and Biden “re-classified” his records and the DOJ issued subpoenas for his records, President Trump was effectively in a position where he was damned if he did and damned if he didn’t. If he turned over classified records to the FBI, this could have been construed as a violation of the Espionage Act itself.

Someone, I don’t know who, might take you seriously if you were able to post something without being foul-mouthed and lacking an argument.

The venue is so good they were able to find a GJ willing to indict him on flimsy charges.

>> He was holding something that he had a right to bring with him

Supposedly, or possibly figuratively to underscore whatever point he was hoping to make.

The audio quotes I’ve seen are 100% benign.

I understand that the Feds also have a grand jury in DC looking at espionage charges related to the documents. My guess is that if they get an indictment with that grand jury, they will petition to combine the cases in DC where they would have a very biased jury pool.

Hey, I’m from Wy and I didn’t vote for Barrasso last time and won’t next time. I also voted for Loomis last time, but since she got in she put on the woke badge and is a total disappointment. The only reepresentation the state of Wy has in Congress now is Harriet Hageman.

Sorry to read that about Loomis.

At this pint she should be shunned and made to feel so uncomfortable that she doesn’t publicly ever show back up in the state.

Let it be known that she is ‘one and done’.

She should be treated in such a way that she moves her family to DC and never return.

Some would say that’s harsh. Well, what is harsher? Running her out of wyoming or the way the government and the US Senate treats us? She made her bed, let her lie in it.

Wasn’t it some kind of writer/journalist? If so, likley they were recording for a written piece and Trump knew t was being recorded—that is a key point—whether he knew or not.

He kept documents that he believed would prove his cases against whomever of the government, had wronged him; and he did not want to surrender such documents.

The leftists wanted to get their hands on those documents.
