Do these 3 things now to protect yourself after Oregon DMV data breach

The Oregon DMV data breach is just the latest in a long list that affects consumers. State officials confirmed the breach had extended to about 90% of the state’s driver’s license and ID card files.

Nationally, millions of people have sensitive information, such as login credentials, bank account info and Social Security numbers, floating around the internet just waiting to be exploited.

At this point, it’s safe to assume that some of your information is out there. Now it’s a matter of doing what you can to protect yourself and deter malevolent actors from making you a victim of identity theft.

What you can do

Take three important steps to limit the exposure of your personal info and protect yourself if some data is already out there.

Freeze your credit: Safeguarding your credit files is fairly easy — and free. The best approach is to freeze your credit with the three main credit bureaus: Equifax, Experian and TransUnion. Equifax: equifax.com/personal/credit-report-services or 1-800-685-1111; Experian: experian.com/help or 1-888-397-3742; TransUnion: transunion.com/credit-help or 1-888-909-8872.

Regularly check your credit reports: You’re entitled to a free copy of your credit report from the three major credit bureaus every 12 months. Review your reports and look for any lines of credit you don’t recognize because that can be a red flag for fraud.

Limit exposure: Do a quick security check on other online accounts. Do you have multi-factor authentication set up? Do you have secure, hard-to-guess passwords? Limit the number of databases and filing systems containing your Social Security number.

Zero accountability in government has bled over to Zero accountability in finance, Zero accountability in trade, Zero accountability in enforcement of immigration laws, Zero accountability in health care, Zero accountability in media, Zero accountability in education, Zero accountability in employment practices, Zero accountability in the administration of all/any ‘services’ consumers/taxpayers have always enjoyed and which they have every right to expect…etc.

this hack happened to weeks ago and the oregon DMV has still NOT announced what personal data was stolen ... and the fascist corporate media is playing along ... instead of DEMANDING to know what data was stolen as well as filing a bunch of lawsuits to find out, they publish nothing but a bunch of BS articles about checking your credit reports ...

As an Oregonian I am outraged att he dummies who let this happen. I have written to my state representative demanding three things.

(1) Free credit monitoring for all residents.

(2) Free credit repair for all residents, and

(3) Establishment of a task force (combined law enforcement and military) to find and imprison the perpetrators.

This should be standard procedure for all breaches of any government data. An expeditionary task force, complete with military weapons, would put a quick stop to this nonsense.

The Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT) says the full social security numbers of Department of Motor Vehicle (DMV) were not accessed in the hacker attack that may have compromised 3.5 million Oregon driver’s license and identification card holders.

ODOT said Friday that accessed information included dates of birth, physical addresses, and the last four digits of Social Security numbers.

“This information did not include banking, credit card or any other financial information. Your entire Social Security number was not part of this data,” ODOT said.
