Smoke from raging Canadian wildfires hits Europe as record 18.7M acres burn

Smoke from the Canadian wildfires has traveled across the Atlantic Ocean and reached Europe as part of the worst fire season in history for the northern forests, officials say.

The smoke that left New York City covered in an orange smog earlier this month was spotted arriving in the United Kingdom on Monday, with pictures from space depicting the arrival of the haze, according to the UK Met Office.

Fortunately for the British, the powerful jet-stream winds that carried the smoke across the pond helped dissipate the strength of the smog by the time it reached the shores of the UK, meaning residents there don’t have to fear the eerie orange glow or serious air-quality drop that befell New York earlier this month.

“Whilst the smoke is high up in the atmosphere, it may make for some vivid sunrises and sunsets in the next few days,” the Met Office tweeted.

How do you go about putting these fires out? Or is it too out of control?

I'll bet next year will be the "best" year for fires. Probably no headlines then.

Don’t lst it get nearly that big.

Or use a lot of manpower, A Lot of manpower, to cut down or control burn what is in the path of the fires.

There are other things like pouring water on areas to control the heat, but there will never be enough water or equipment for a fire this size. These woods should have been managed beforehand to control what fires would be allowed.

So far, so good here in North Idaho. Just the very slightest hint of haze now and then. Unlike a couple years ago when we were covered in smoke for weeks on end.

The majority of the fires were caused by deliberate acts of Eco terrorism.

Chart is in hectares. Article is in acres. 1 acre = 0.4046856 hectares. So, 18.7 m acres ≈ 7.45 m hectares

Once the fires get going, there is not a lot firefighters can do to put them out. In remote areas of Canada there is often noway to bring in heavy equipment to fight the fires. If a town is jeopardy, firefighters will try to make a stand.
