Vermont town to let 16- and 17-year-olds vote in local elections, after legislature overrode veto

Sixteen- and 17-year-olds in one prominent Vermont town will be able to vote in local elections and serve on the community’s selectboard if elected, after the Democrat-controlled state Legislature overrode the Republican governor’s veto of the Brattleboro charter change.

A half dozen cities and towns in California and Maryland have lowered the voting age to 16 for either all local elections or school board elections, according to the National Youth Rights Association.

Organizers of the push to lower the age in the southern Vermont town of Brattleboro say the community of 7,300 is the first one in the country where 16-year-olds can vote in municipal elections and hold the highest elected offices. Besides the selectboard, young voters may also serve as representatives to the town’s annual town meeting, where local issues are decided.

Brattleboro is fine if you are a hipster heroin addict. Other than that…not much to it.

Yeah, I’d have to lean in your direction on this. Letting
these kids vote on local issues, means nothing more than
letting children influence public debate.

Kids have a big enough problem with maturity these days,
and sixteen and seventeen year old kids are not more mature
then the sixteen and seventeen year old’s back in the 80s,
which is probably the driving idea behind lowering the age.

Watch—they’ll start voting in State and Federal elections too. And if they are caught...oopsie! No prosecution because they are leftists.

If they’re old enough to vote, they’re old enough to draft into the military.

And old enough to purchase and use firearms.

And to serve on juries (No excuses - If working adults have to miss (and still make up) work, they can miss (and make up) school).

And to be held legally and financially responsible as an adult for the consequences of their actions and decisions.

And pay taxes.

Heading for a WILD IN THE STREETS(1968) Scenario. I read the original story decades ago in ESQUIRE magazine. Didn’t see the movie till a few years ago.

I call it “the Cantina scene from Star Wars”. One pass through the downtown and you’ll see what I mean.

Let states run their own elections. Typically that’s our mantra. Have we changed that? Local only affects that area.

We’re talking Vermont. Even though one of the whitest states in America, it’s also one of the most liberal. Very strange. That’s why I can care less about this. Only hurting themselves.
