U.S. Honeybees Suffer Second Deadliest Season on Record

Figures published today reveal beekeepers in the U.S. lost an estimated 48% of their honey bee colonies in 2022-23. According to an annual survey that tracks the state of managed hives, this is the second highest death rate on record after 2020-21's 51%. Honey bees are crucial to our food supply, pollinating over 100 different crop types. As reported by Bee Informed, a national collaboration of leading research labs and universities in agricultural science, the most prominent cause of colony death reported by commercial beekeepers over the year was “varroa destructor” - a parasitic mite that attacks and feeds on honey bees. In the summer, 'Queen issues' were the second most common reason cited, followed by 'adverse weather'. According to the publication, "although the total number of honey bee colonies in the country has remained relatively stable over the last 20 years (~2.6 million colonies according to the USDA NASS Honey Reports), loss rates remain high". This puts beekeepers under "substantial pressure" to create new colonies each year.

From an anecdotal standpoint, I’ve seen a sharp decline in honeybees and an increase is solitary bees. Your mileage may vary.

“Deer flies” became virtually extinct in south central Pennsylvania during the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic of 2020.

I finally felt ONE attempting to bite me this year.

IMHO the CCP virus was trans-species.

When I lived in Reading Pa, deer flies were the bane of my existence- especially while fishing.

Lost my 2 hives in fall 2019. But it was the bear that got them one colder fall day.

I thought no one really knew what caused this.

I heard the many cell towers emitted waves that were interfering with the bees’ orientation and they got lost and died away from the hives.

Guess that didn’t turn out.

Maybe it’s a Chinese sting operation.

Agreed...but knowing the timeline of their departure I was actually happy to feel one bite earlier this week.

C-19 was a trans/panspecies bioweapon, IMHO, and we had better respond in kind.

At least a MOAB or two into the Three Gorges Dam.

What is the Canadian wild fire smoke doing to the honey bees?

I guess I should be pleased that I only lost one hive out of eight this year. It’s a bad honey year in Middle Tennessee though.

Yes, we sure wouldn't want to lose the bioweapon race. Of course, it was Fauci and his minions from the USA who were funding CCP led gain of function research that spilled out and got a bunch of Chinese people sick. These people got their relatives from the USA who were back in country for the Chinese New Year sick. When they returned back to the USA they brought “C-19” with them.

How do I know? My wife and I had worked at the Kirkland Life Care Center just shortly before this BS arrived and was the first skilled care facility to lose a bunch of old people in the country. There is a huge concentration of Chinese people who live around Kirkland in Eastern King County.

52% of 61% of 49% of 56% of 59% of 40% of 67% of 100% means that 98.7% of bee keepers’ colonies have died out since 2016?

Even the bees have gone on strike in the US. They dislike the Biden economy as much as the humans do.

I’ve been seeing the usual number of honeybees here which is way down from.my childhood.

I read that the commercial frames with the comb stamped out for the bees to build on, make the cells just a bit bigger than the bees naturally wood. Saves on wax, more energy to honey production.

So the larval bees grow bigger than they naturally would and are more prone to mites, can’t groom themselves as well.

There are high grooming strains of bees that do better protecting themselves from mites, but are still vulnerable to other problems.

Beekeepers please correct me if I am wrong. I do hope to keep bees one day but sounds risky.

It appears that the honeybee population has markedly declined since my childhood.

As an aside, I haven’t seen a red-winged blackbird since the early 90s.

Most of the solitary bees are actually natives, and they pollinate more effectively during the shorter times each of the various kinds are out and about...but they don’t produce honey...or attack people.
