Taxpayers Shelled Out Millions To Boost Electric Vehicle Maker That Just Went Belly Up
Daily Caller News Foundation ^ | June 27, 2023 | Will Kessler

Electric Vehicle maker Lordstown Motors Corp. (LMC) announced it was filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy Tuesday despite receiving millions in taxpayer funding through tax breaks and grants.

LMC received $4.5 million from JobsOhio, a private nonprofit that collects funds through a government-mandated monopoly on spirituous liquor sales, according to Cleveland.com, and $20 million in tax credits to be paid out over 15 years by the Ohio Tax Credit Authority, according to Business Journal Daily. LMC also received a $40 million loan from the previous owner of the plant, General Motors, who received $60 million in subsidies from the state of Ohio, giving back only $28 million after a settlement was reached due to the stipulation that the plant was supposed to be open until 2039.

In 2009, the plant received $60 million from Ohio to build fuel-efficient and inexpensive cars when it was under the ownership of GM, but it was shut down in 2019 and sold by GM to LMC, according to Reason.

Foxconn, a multinational electronics manufacturer, announced it was investing $170 million in LMC in 2021 to build and fund the plant, which LMC alleges was not fully delivered, according to a press release from LMC, prompting the filing of Chapter 11 bankruptcy and a suit being filed against Foxconn.

“Despite our best efforts and earnest commitment to the partnership, Foxconn willfully and repeatedly failed to execute on the agreed-upon strategy, leaving us with Chapter 11 as the only viable option to maximize the value of Lordstown’s assets for the benefit of our stakeholders,” LMC CEO and President Edward Hightower said, according to the press release.

Foxconn denied the allegations in statements shared with the Daily Caller News Foundation.

Other automotive manufacturers have also received huge subsidies from the government for electric vehicle production. Ford Motor Co. plans to lay off at least 1,000 employees, The Wall Street Journal reports, less than a week after receiving a $9.2 billion loan from the Biden administration to invest in three electric vehicle factories in the southern U.S.

The move for more funding for electric vehicles comes as the Biden administration pushes for 50% of all vehicle sales by 2030 to be zero-emission vehicles, according to the White House. The White House also designated $370 billion in funding for climate initiatives in the Inflation Reduction Act.

Fine example of how government central planning causes economic dysfunction.

SOMEBODY got rich thanks to my “contributions” AGAIN!

I’d sure like to find and support people who can claw back our “investment” from all these grifters.

FYI...E-cars use fewer parts, meaning manufacturing of car parts...if this trend continued, would lead to fewer jobs (fewer union jobs).

I noticed this comment made four years ago with the German Audi folks. They were figuring 30-to-40 percent fewer car jobs (assembling and parts production) in the end.

Millions...?

Snort. That’s peanuts. From a day ago...

That’s $9.2 BILLION.

Solyndra was the first thing that came to mind. These scoundrels have a formula for converting hundreds of millions of our dollars into seaside mansions for themselves.
A deep dive into LMC might reveal where some of the money went.
I would suggest a mass gallows, beginning at noon today, and running 24/7 for a month, for a start.

Unfortunately PDJT was a big fan of Lordstown Motors/electric trucks:

(He needs to get off the “food as fuel”/ethanol bandwagon too)

Ford lays off 1,000 employees because of EV manufacturing losses = $34,000 on each Ford EV .. Ford has expects to lose $3 billion.

Electric vehicles put a massive stress on roads.. The batteries are heavy with many models weighing more than two tons..

EVs are not currently charged a fuel duty to maintain the roads and bridges on the electricity used to recharge them..

Good question.

I met a guy who worked at Lordstown, about 40 or so years ago and I seem to remember Lordstown (GM) has a history of employee purchase to keep jobs.

I vaguely remember Lordstown was (at the time) into electric harnesses.

This is a memory many years old so I could be 100% MISTAKEN.

What’s the old adage?

It wasn’t us taxpayers who shelled out the money to finance this latest globalist night dream.

It was the politicians and bureaucrats of the Idiocracy who shelled out the tax money.

That tax money was extorted from us under threats of punishment up to and including long prison sentences.

Solyndra is evidently the blueprint for the massive fleecing of the American taxpayers. Money laundering for the corrupt and connected.

Brian Sullivan
@SullyCNBC

Ford laying off ‘at least’ 1,000 salaried and contract workers.

It will lose $3 billion making EVs this year.

Ford is now likely losing more than $30,000 on every electric it sells.

Last week the federal government (i.e. you) loaned Ford and a South Korean company $9.2 billion to build battery factories in the south, on top of federal tax credits to entice buyers.

The next few years should be interesting for Detroit (and taxpayers)

Let’s see if its .. sustainable.

Speaking of Solyndra... whatever happened to the financial records that the FBI scooped up the next day after they filed bankruptcy?

More EVs and an electrical grid that is already at or near capacity. No way we can generate enough electricity to power a country where 50% of new cars sold are EVs by 2030. Insane zealots.

The electric harnesses were “Packard Electric” owned by GM then under Delphi brand. Lordstown has ALWAYS had union “issues.”

Something ironic, Lordstown was the ONLY plant that produced the Chevy Cruze. Quietly, GM started moving production to Mexico. THEN to spit in the eyes of the union, Mecican produced Cruzes could be found on a car dealer’s lot very close to the Lordstown plant. The Union didn’t see this coming until it was too late. I remember taking a plant tour not long after it first opened. They made the Vega back then. Damn, I’m getting old!!
