Among the proper bases for criminal sentences are (1) societal retribution; (2) avoidance of recurrence; (3) deterrence of others. These simpletons get to be heard on No. 1. We have quite enough of the system ignoring 2 and 3 these days

Precisely. The purpose of the law is to protect Society at Large. These people have no inherent right to sick this Criminal on other people.
In addition, the principal works in the other direction. Suppose the guy had grabbed her purse and walked away causing no physical harm. And they said their belief was that he should be executed in public for stealing the purse. How would that fly?
