Actually July 2 was the day that the Continental Congress voted for independence, but ever since 1777 Americans have celebrated July 4 as Independence Day.

John Adams deserves some credit for proposing George Washington as the commander in chief of the Continental Army. Without Washington the chances of Americans winning their independence would have been much less--he was the indispensable man. Of course Benjamin Franklin deserves some thanks too for his efforts to bring France into the war...but the soldiers who won the battle of Saratoga (or actually the two battles) made his argument that the Americans could actually win the war much more believable.

My Revolutionary War ancestor was in the Virginia militia in the siege of Yorktown. I don't know if he ever saw Washington with his own eyes but I can hope so.

His supporting generals founded The Order of Cincinnatus with him. One of them helped found Losantiville on the banks of the Ohio River and convinced locals to change her name to Cincinnati in honor of Washington and his Generals. To this day, there is a flag that flies on Fountain Square that is the flag of the Order of Cincinnatus.
