My dad was assigned a 2 year billet in Honolulu (CINCPACFLT). We packed up our belongings from the house in Imperial Beach, CA and took a train and bus to San Francisco. From there, we boarded a US Navy ship and sailed to Honolulu. I had my 5th birthday on the ship. We stayed in a hotel in Waikiki for a couple weeks awaiting officer's quarters. Home would be 1156 Cakon St. Walking distance to Pearl Harbor Elementary where my kindergarten teacher was Mrs Okuna (chinese) and 1st grade teacher Mrs Onaga (japanese). The school sponsored a vaccine night in the cafeteria where everyone in my family received the polio vaccine on a sugar cube (contaminated with SV40). Evening amusements included running through the fog created by the mosquito fogging trucks. We did take a drive around the island to see the "blow hole". On another evening, dinner at the officer's club with entertainment provided by the "Smothers Brothers". I wouldn't hear of them again until they landed a TV show. We left Honolulu on a Boeing 707 that landed at San Diego Lindbergh Field. The old control tower on Pacific Highway was still in use at the time.
I've never been back. My middle son and sister have been there for vacations.
