(RNS) — Whitworth University, a Christian school affiliated with the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.), has revised its policies to allow for the hiring of faculty who identify as LGBTQ and to add sexual orientation to its non-discrimination statement.
In so doing, it joins a sliver of Christian colleges and universities that are hiring faculty in same-sex marriages. Last year, Eastern University, a Christian school affiliated with the American Baptist Churches USA, made a similar change to its hiring policy.
Whitworth, which is located in Spokane, Washington, and last academic year had an enrollment of 2,500 students, announced the change on Thursday (June 29), following a year-long study. The school requires faculty to be Christian, but has hired non-evangelicals and Catholics, too.
“After careful consideration of this broad input, the board voted yesterday to resolutely uphold the Christ-centered commitments required of Whitworth staff and faculty; safeguard the campus environment to allow for civil discourse on topics about which faithful Christians disagree, including God’s design for sexual expression; and add ‘sexual orientation’ to the university’s list of protected classes, which already includes color, gender, ethnicity, social or economic class, and nationality,” the statement from Whitworth President Scott McQuilkin and Board Chair Brian Kirkpatrick said.
The vast majority of Christian schools do not allow LGBTQ faculty even as some — mostly Catholic and mainline Protestant schools —have added “sexual orientation” in their nondiscrimination statements for students.
A retired Whitworth University political science professor who identified herself as a lesbian in a New Yorker profile last year may have played a behind-the-scenes role in the university’s move, though she was not directly involved in any of the discussions.

PCUSA is the leftist, woke, largely unbiblical denomination that claim to be Presbyterian.
PCA is a conservative Presbyterian church...there is a leftist insurgence therein, but it has been kept at bay.
It amazes me that a Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) school had not allowed LGBTQ teachers before this. As the prior poster mentioned, PCUSA is so liberal that it almost isn’t a religion anymore.
They need to drop the word Christian from their name. They are not. They do not even believe in the bible.
I am no longer amazed or shocked by Christian Churches, especially the larger profitable ones. It seems to me, the larger & more profitable they are, the more fluid their convictions and beliefs are.
We live in sad times.
Stances like this are the reason I left organized religion. I don’t need someone expecting me to accept something like the blasphemy of God to talk and give thanks to God. Church is in the heart, not in the building.

I did my freshman year of college at then Whitworth College. At the time, it was widely accepted as the most liberal/lenient Christian college in the country.
Translated statement:
We are worried about lawsuits and lack of Gods’ (if He really exists) provision for us. Therefore in order to not be exposed as doubters, and false “carriers” of the good news of Jesus the Christ and in order to keep our jobs, and our small university from going bankrupt we will acquiesce to the demands of craven sex addicts whose main idea for pleasure is the stretching of sensory receptors by anyone willing to do it at anytime by any stretching tool. Never mind that Gods word( which we doubt is REALLY Gods’ word) explicitly prohibits anyone of the same sex as the “do-ee” from doing that procedure with their own body or body part. Supposedly Gods’ word (which we REALLY don’t believe anyway) prohibits the “do-ee” from allowing such procedure. But what’ya gonna do, fight City Hall?

Partially true...but fwiw, the PCUSA is hemorrhaging members. People are fleeing the apostasy.
All Christians know that homosexuality is all of its presentations is an abomination. People in charge can suck up to the woke crowd, but from the salvation side, I would caution against it.
