Louisiana Lawmakers Override Democrat Governor’s Veto Of Child Sex Change Ban In Rare Vote

In a rare move, the Louisiana legislature has voted to override Democrat Governor John Bel Edwards’ veto of a bill that shields children from life-altering sex-change procedures.

The bill, called the “Stop Harming Our Kids Act,” will prevent doctors from performing transgender procedures like double mastectomies on girls who identify as boys and administering puberty blockers and cross-sex hormones to children.

“Today was a huge win for the children of Louisiana! I’m proud of my colleagues in the state legislature for standing up to protect the children of our great state. We made it clear today that our children are worth fighting for. This great victory would not have been possible without the prayers and support of parents, grandparents, pastors, and grassroots organizations from around the state who rose up and declared with one voice that ‘No one in Louisiana has the right to harm a child’. God Bless the families of our beautiful state!” Louisiana Republican Rep. Gabe Firment, the sponsor of the legislation, told The Daily Wire in a statement.

A win for Louisiana and the children there.

Normally, this would stop here. Any bets on the Governor and his backers taking it to the courts?

Absolutely. We got a majority legislature, but we couldn’t get Governor John Bel Edwards out of there? I’ve always suspected it was another stolen election. Louisiana is a red state, with a few exceptions in N.O., Baton Rouge & a few other parishes. The Edwards family is a politically powerful family. No relation to Edwin Edwards that was sent to prison.

I remember Edwin Edwards. Colorful guy, but a slimy POS. He was term-limited, and Republican Dave Treen shocked the pundits when he won the governorship in 1979 (taking office in 1980), defeating the insufferable Louis Lambert.

That was before I moved down here. My wife probably remembers it very well. We moved down here so she could take care of her dad. He’s now 98, and may out live his daughter & me. 🙂

And if they lose in court, they’ll just continue to do it quietly. The ways Dems are. if they lose, they don’t stop.

A real surprise, LA has a peculiar fondness for governors named Edwards.

But Treen was hamstrung by the Democrat legislators still loyal to Edwards and was soundly defeated in their 1983 showdown.

Treen also supported liberal Sen. Mary Landrieu in either 2002 or 2008 or both.

He departs anyway in mid-January 2024. He will be active in a Democrat presidential campaign for sure.

“That was before I moved down here.”

I voted for Treen, and at the time I thought it was more than a longshot, as he was the only Republican in the field; and when he got enough votes to run-off against Lambert I thought he’d really be toast, but I still voted for him because he was not a Democrat. And he won! We were all pretty stunned (in my case, happily).

“But Treen was hamstrung by the Democrat legislators still loyal to Edwards and was soundly defeated in their 1983 showdown.”

Yup. Treen’s winning the 1980 gubernatorial race stunned everyone (but, I was HAPPILY stunned, as I thought my being a Republican in Democrat-run Louisiana was akin to being an orphan). But Lambert was such a louse that even some Dems crossed over to vote for Treen. Then, when Edwards came back to run in the 1984 race he, of course, won against Treen.

You’re right about the Democrat legislature kneecapping Treen.

Treen supported the Landrieu clan, which rumor had it had supported him against Lambert, at least behind the scenes.

Good deal. If I had been down here then, it would have made 2 of us. 🙂 👍

Was he any good or a disappointment?

“Was he any good or a disappointment?”

He was pretty good, considering he had a hostile legislature to deal with. He was the first Republican to be elected Louisiana governor since Reconstruction. As I said previously: He was a long shot.
