Sound of Freedom

“Sound of Freedom,” the movie of the moment, has a message first, and a story second. Its message is to get us to care more about the horrors of child sex trafficking. It does that by showing queasy sequences of kids in danger, being carted around by slimy adults, and making us remember everyone’s faces. Then it gives us a weary hero, Tim Ballard, an American man whose superpower is that he cares. This father and husband cares so much that he leaves his job at Homeland Security ten months before earning a pension. Instead of only catching pedophiles, as he has done nearly 300 times before, he goes to Colombia and undercover to help rescue children. This man is played by a gentle and gravely serious Jim Caviezel, who shoulders this message’s suffering just like when he played Jesus Christ in Mel Gibson’s “The Passion of the Christ.”

The story is true, but it barely comes to life with such a telling. Which is a shame, not just because it’s uncomfortable to be numbed by these themes, but also because director Alejandro Monteverde well-clears the low bar for filmmaking one expects from movies that are message-first (and often come with similar faith-driven backers). Take away the noise surrounding it, and “Sound of Freedom” has distinct cinematic ambitions: a non-graphic horror film with what could be called an art-house sensibility for muted rage and precise, striking shadows derived from an already bleak world. If “Sound of Freedom” were less concerned with being something "important," it could be more than a mood, it could be a movie.

Great movie, well done.

Liberals have made thousands of films and television episodes. As such, they can easily drop a line about McCarthyism, Nixon, Trump, global warming, back-street abortions, mistreatment of people “born that way,” racism, abusive husbands, etc. and the topic (and attitude) is instantly understood. No one film has to bear the burden of informing the audience of a problem.

If every crime series had an episode about pedophilia and sex slaves, then the Sound of Freedom would have been able to change its focus.

If Roger E. made my point for me, then I’ll happily give him credit. If not, the fault is his. Let me know.

Good movie, edgy subject matter but well done in exposing the crime of selling children.

Just the full head shots of him are enough tomake the point. A handsome man who is the real deal, he is not the typical Hollywood actor.

I reccomend the movie.

Now, on to “Oppenheimer.”

Without saying exactly what I do, I got to watch something I’ll never forget.

About 15 years ago (and you may well be wondering, “this guy tells the same story back to back to back, how can he remember anything?” but this was the single worst abuse of authority I’ve ever seen.) I’m down at the Airport and there’s a couple of brand new officers fresh out of the Academy. These guys were “Badge Heavy” in the extreme, going through the passenger area like a couple of sharks, looking to ruin someone’s day - the WORST kind of officer you EVER want to serve with, these two idiots were out to make us all look like assholes.

So, they lock onto this guy, traveling with his family. They count nine kids, which to them, indicates human trafficking. Couple of problems though, they’re doing EVERYTHING in contradiction of EVERY indicator there is:

Dad is in a great mood, smiling, striking up conversations with other passengers.
Mom is doting on the kids.
Kids are running around, playing tag, and everyone over five is holding their passports ready for inspection, as they run and giggle.
But y’know, nine kids, and of varying races too!

Well, these two jokers drag all eleven of them back to secondary. Me, being in the next line over have a front row seat.

These guys are interrogating THE KIDS (amongst others)...
“What’s your birthday? Mom, what’s her birthday”
“What size shoe do you wear? Mom, what size? (Checking what’s in the luggage).
“Dad, what’s this kid’s zodiac sign/what grade is she in/what’s his favorite color?”

So we were all gathering around, not to stare at the family, but to watch these two monkeys browbeat American Citizens. Our only question is “Are they Mormon or Evangelical Christians?”

Finally, The Katzenjammer Kids try to fire up Dad’s laptop. At that point, a supervisor can’t watch any longer and tells them to stop. “Sir, what line of work are you in?” “I’m a Secret Service Agent.”
The Supe says, “Alright guys, end of inspection. I want you to help this family repack their bags, and then you make sure all the bags get to their connecting flight without any hold up, badge the TSA if you need to.” (Fun fact, Mormon, the heavy favorite, came in winner, hands down.)

So, this week, I’m driving to work and I hear an interview with one of the Producers for the #2 ranked film “Sound of Freedom” and he’s discussing Tim Ballard. Secret Service, Operation Underground Railroad, nine kids…

I get to the office, I look him up, well son-of-a-bitch, guess who The Bobbsey Twins zeroed in for human trafficking, Tim Ballard, definitely involved with Human Trafficking, BUT HE WAS ON OUR SIDE!!!

it could be more than a mood, it could be a movie.

so it’s not “really” a “ movie”.
