How the U.S. drove Russia to invade Ukraine

Sen. Chris Coons wrote in The News Journal last year that Russia’s invasion of Ukraine was unprovoked. Surprisingly, the Senator either did not see or did not understand the multiple ways that actions by the U.S., NATO and the current government of Ukraine threatened Russia’s security and provoked the invasion. By moving NATO missile bases (which can instantaneously switched into offensive mode) right up to the Russian border in Poland and Romania, and stating repeatedly that Ukraine would join NATO, which could bring NATO missiles within 6 minutes of Moscow, the U.S. and NATO created severe threats to Russia’s national security.

Russia will move their missiles into Cuba, and you will begin to understand how the neocon game ends up

uh, NATO bases right on Russia’s border were the justification for illegally invading Ukraine?

yet that same invasion prompted Finland to join NATO, so the end result is ...

** NATO bases right on Russia’s border **

(except now Russia is stuck in a 7-year war it can’t win ... brilliant moves there, Vlady!!)

If Moscow had not been actively occupying and invading countries all around it after WW2, there never would have been a NATO. But it did and it still does, which is why NATO still exists. No matter whether Stalin, Khrushchev, or Putin is the dictator du jour, it's been "give 'em an inch and they'll take a mile" since the beginning of time. Blaming US policy is a cynical excuse for Putin's barbaric behaviour.

Sure am glad the US doesn’t have a history of imperialism, expansion, and invading foreign countries (even countries on the other side of the planet).

What “missile bases”?

All such Nato missiles (cruise missiles capable of deep strike in Russia) are air launched.

Funny thing is that all those countries which the US has, er, “interacted” with somehow generate millions of people who want to become Americans.

The Russians...

“Just more Kremlin propaganda.”

Absolutely. The missiles being considered for deployment in Poland were anti-missile weapons; in other words, defensive platforms, designed to shoot down offensive missiles launched from Russia. And they can’t be “instantaneously switched to offensive mode.” And all of this was planned more than 15 years ago; and, at that, Obama shut it down! Then, AFTER Russia’s second invasion of Ukraine, in February, 2014, those anti-missile batteries were deployed in Poland as a RESPONSE to Russia’s second invasion of Ukraine.

I really want to know what that guy means by “missile bases”. His argument hangs on that. As far as I know there is nothing in US inventories that could possibly come under that heading.

Aegis Ashore

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aegis_Ballistic_Missile_Defense_System#Aegis_Ashore

This is probably what they mean.
SM3 Ballistic missile interceptors.
Under construction in Poland and Romania.

SM3’s are just interceptors. Even if they could be used in a ballistic land attack mode like Russian S300 and S400, they would be lousy at it.

I would love to see Cuba vote to become a province of the Russian Federation. That would finally teach the war cheerleaders a thing or two …..a sovereign Russian Federation right on our doorstep- go for it Vlad, time to outplay our corrupted government.

“No matter whether Stalin, Khrushchev, or Putin is the dictator du jour”

You make some valid points however the times have changed. Stalin and Khrushchev led the Soviet Union. The Soviet Union was comprised of Russia and 14 other, presumably conquered, states. Today Russia is just Russia.

The Soviet Union was the leader of worldwide communism. Russia is not a communist state. Last I heard they had a flat rate income tax. While it deserves examination, it might well be less socialistic than our own tax system.

Russia is not the Soviet Union. Everything, including NATO, should be re-thought.

There is a major communist nation. It’s China. The succession of communist dictators runs through Stalin, Khruschev, Mao and Xi Jinping.

“You understand nothing about strategic missiles and their use.”

I have quite a background there, from before the “peace dividend”. Goes back to my career in aerospace manufacturing (metrology engineer). I have been on most of the major shop floors in the industry in my time.

I’ve also read extensively, from Herman Kahn onwards.
What do you want to know?
