Biden Administration Considering New Tariffs That Will Hike Prices for Canned Goods
Reason ^ | 7.24.2023 | ERIC BOEHM

The Biden administration is considering a new set of tariffs on some steel imports that would increase food prices for consumers already reeling from the recent run of high inflation.

The Commerce Department and the International Trade Commission are considering a petition that would impose tariffs of up to 300 percent on tinplate steel, a key component in tin cans like those commonly used to pack food products including tuna, soup, baked beans, and more. If the administration decides to implement those tariffs on imports from eight countries, it would be a blatantly protectionist maneuver aimed at benefitting a single American company—the Ohio-based Cleveland-Cliffs Inc., which requested the tariffs—at the expense of consumers nationwide.

Those proposed tariffs will "threaten jobs, in the name of boosting employment" and "raise prices for low-income consumers, in the name of helping the working class," writes The Washington Post's Catherine Rampell.

Indeed, the past few years should leave little doubt that tariffs not only impose economic costs on consumers but also fail to achieve their politically motivated goals. Study after study has shown that the tariffs levied by the Trump administration on steel, aluminum, and lots of other goods resulted in American consumers paying higher prices. Earlier this month, in fact, another new report found that U.S. importers are shouldering 93 percent of the added costs from Donald Trump's tariffs.

The Biden regime considers tariffs (a form of tax) on the cans our food comes in, to raise prices even more and make our food even more unaffordable. They really enjoy harming ordinary Americans; the pain is ht epoint.

Decent people cannot fathom the amoral cruelty of the Biden regime.

Canned goods that were $1.00 two years ago are now $1.59.

That’s 60% inflation.

And now Pedo Joe wants to make it ever worse.

How could ANYONE vote for this scumbag?

No mention that the reason President Trump created tariffs was because other countries were dumping products into the US to support their industries, at the expense of US producers.

However, I bet the “big guy” is, or wants to be, buddies with the company that would profit from this, Cleveland-Cliffs Inc.

“”Decent people cannot fathom the amoral cruelty of the Biden regime.””

Prog are not amoral in the regular understanding of the term.

.

“”Are psychopaths amoral?
Psychopaths are amoral rather than immoral because they fail to understand the nature of moral considerations at all.””

.

To me they do not appear to fail to understand so much as they enjoy the cruelty they administer and show off what they have done to other progs around them.

This is the “virtue signaling” that the prog love so much. It typically comes at a price for all the normal people around the virtue victims.

The more they do it the more they like it as it is applauded by other progs accompanying the attacker.

If one still believes the prog can be rehabilitated they should start with an attention getting form of negative reinforcement.

A baseball bat is a good example.

In old America we even knew how to make our own steel.

They are utterly amoral. They have literally no moral code or principles or limit exept “Can we get away with this?”

This is the old AK Steel, Which came about because of the Japanese effort to destroy American industry. Referred to as Armasaki by the locals. It was previously Armco.

But, that’s a good thing, because raising those (and other) prices, increases sales tax revenues collected, which helps pay for ‘benefits’ to help low earning consumers. /SAR

I despise f’n free traitors and chamber of commerce republicans. That’s why we are where were at. Made in America by god. The fact we never had tariffs with the Japanese is why most of our own industry has been destroyed. Now we’re watching China’s military make an incredible rise. We’re funding our own demise. The largest piping supplier in Ohio is now defunct because of China steel. FJB is doing this so he can have the media saying he helped the union, nothing more. Union rope-a-dope is all this is.

Guys, you need to be proactive and start preparing for winter. I’ve already rotated my totes and donated away the product that was expiring. This winter is going to be brutal. Hopefully it’ll be my last in Wisconsin. I’ve already fell in love with West Virginia and scouting out land down there to build my retirement home.

Yes, and aluminum too. I have been in Armco while going to college and Reynolds aluminum. I don’t think the Reynolds plant in Cincinnati even exist any more.

I once designed a large scale hypersonic test chamber and used A-36 plate steel. That was what Armco was known for back in the day, structural steel.
