Latvia to Ask Thousands of Russian Citizens to Leave the Country

Latvia's Office of Citizenship and Migration Affairs (PMLP) will send letters in September to six thousand Russian citizens, requesting them to leave the country.

According to LSM, Ingmārs Līdaka, the Chairman of the Seimas Commission on Citizenship, Migration, and Social Cohesion, stated that this concerns those who haven't even attempted to pass the examination for obtaining the status of a permanent EU resident.

"Roughly 5,000 to 6,000, according to my estimates. These are people who have shown no desire – neither to take the exam nor obtain a temporary residence permit. These are the silent ones. If we look at the law as it currently stands, PMLP must send a notice to leave the country within three months," said Līdaka.

Latvia's Ministry of Interior Affairs confirmed the preparation of such letters. The recipients are estimated to be around 6,000 individuals.

"If a person does not have the right to stay in the country, they must leave for a country where they have the right to stay. The time for departure is three months. So the person can leave without haste. If a person continues to stay in Latvia illegally, there may come a moment when state structures find out about it and, accordingly, remind them of the need to leave. Criminal liability is not provided, but administrative liability is. The person may be fined," said Vilnis Vitolins, the Deputy Secretary of State of the Ministry of Interior Affairs.

At the same time, he added that such individuals could still obtain any other permit to stay in Latvia, for example, a visa or a temporary residence permit.

After Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine, Latvia asked Russian citizens to take a mandatory exam in the Latvian language.

This decision received a mixed reaction in the country, where thousands of Russians have lived since the collapse of the USSR without obtaining Latvian citizenship. Critics argue that many of them have not been able to integrate into Latvian society.

Earlier, it was reported that 1164 Belarusians and Russians were recognised as a threat to national security in Lithuania.

Smart move on the part of the Latvians to remove the Russian colonists. Send them back to Russia where Putin wants them anyway.

POS Stalin moved those Russians into Latvia. Why they stay there is beyond me. Unless they have Latvian wives or husbands.

Dress them with a sombrero and a fake mustache and have them walk across our Southern border. It’s a win-win.

It is Russians who are not Latvian citizens who are being asked to leave. This is one of the consequences of Russia issuing threats at Latvia.

Also, here is a beautiful video from Latvia:

They're not trying to assimilate. So that's on them.

Interesting you say that. A friend of ours with a Russian wife could not get her a visa to enter the US. So she flew to Mexico City, walked across the border at Tijuana ‘to go shopping’ and she’s been here ever since.

Our southern border is a joke. I agree.

Truth is that, no matter what other country one goes to, the mother country is always the one you left or the one your parents left. Allegiance to the ‘adopted’ country is always suspect, and if battles were to be fought between the mother country and the adopted one, chances are that the mother country wins your allegiance.

I have only one country, that being the U.S. But, I know a lot of people, including some in my family, who were not originally from this country but gained citizenship, while still calling their country of origin their home.

I don’t blame the leaders of Latvia for their moves to send the Russians ‘home’. Even if they had moved to become EU or Latvian citizens, their ‘home’ would always remain Russia.

“Send them to Canada”

Or have them walk to Russia. It’s right next door.

In the 1990’s when the Serbs drove people who weren’t Serbs out it was called “ethnic cleansing” and Bill Clinton had a fit over it.

Sounds like ethnic cleansing but it's ok because they are Russians.

“Why they stay there is beyond me.”

Even if you were a Russian would you want to live in Russia? But they ought to get legal to live in Latvia. But then maybe they don’t understand that since they are just a bunch of dumb Russians.
