It is not “ethnic cleansing” to deport people who are Russian citizens and who hold Russian passports.
Imagine if the USA required people to learn English (assimilate) or leave. The left would be apoplectic. Latvia also passed laws requiring school classes be taught in Latvian, because some schools were teaching students in Russian (no intent to assimilate). Latvia is actually protecting its language, culture and borders. But since it offends Russia, it angers our resident Putler supporters.
Imagine America requiring immigrants to become American. That’s the way it used to be.

Ethnic Russians who are Latvian citizens, who speak Latvian, and who are NOT Russian citizens are not being deported so no, it is not the same.

Can I assume you’re opposed to deporting the non-citizen non-Americans flooding the southern border? You do realize that there is a history of Russians treating Latvians poorly after the Germans signed the non-aggression pact with the Russians before WWII.

The first Soviet invasion of Latvia resulted in the deportation to Siberia of approximately 35,000 people, the second occupation resulted in another 30,000 being exiled.
People were rounded up in the middle of the night, given an hour to prepare to leave and allowed to take no more than 100 kg per person.
Those people were expelled from their own country by the invaders, mostly Russians.
That was ethic cleansing.

It’s even more peculiar. Russia paid these people to renounce their permanent residence permit. They had one before and couldn’t be deported if they hadn’t voluntarily given it away.
