I was thinking the same thing. What’s up with the names?
It all started back in the 1970s with Roots coming on tv. All the blacks started rejecting their 'slave names' (Toby) and reclaimed their 'heritage' with 'African names' (Kunte Kinte). The result was a generation of babies given names that aren't authentically African but sound African.
That's also when Kwanza became a thing (an African Christmas that was in reality made up in the 70s)
You made me think of how far we’ve come. “ROOTS” in the 70s was about African history. Now it’s about their “identity” hairdos.
There was an episode of ‘Sanford and Son’ about that.
