GOP presidential candidate Vivek Ramaswamy wants to ‘cancel Juneteenth’
The New York Post ^ | 08/07/2023 | Victor Nave

Republican presidential candidate Vivek Ramaswamy has called for replacing Juneteenth with Election Day as a national holiday, deriding the celebration of the end of slavery in the US as “useless.”

“Single day voting, on Election Day,” the 37-year-old entrepreneur and longshot 2024 White House contender proposed in a speech before Iowa voters on Saturday. “We will make Election Day a holiday in the United States of America, so there’s no complaints about it.” <

However, Ramaswamy told the crowd that in order to make room for another federal holiday, one of the current 11 would need to be removed from the calendar.

“Cancel Juneteenth or one of the other useless ones we made up,” Ramaswamy said. “You can’t have everything be a holiday, but we’ll cancel one of the other ones and make Election Day a holiday.”

In 2021, President Biden signed legislation declaring June 19, or Juneteenth, a federal holiday.

The celebration commemorates the day in 1865 that federal troops began enforcing the Emancipation Proclamation of 1863 in Galveston, Texas.

It was the first federal holiday to be added to the calendar since Martin Luther King Jr. Day in 1983.

Ramaswamy added that he believes Juneteenth was declared a holiday with a “cultural gun to our head” following nationwide rioting over the murder of George Floyd by Minneapolis police officers in May 2020. *** Ramaswamy added. “And I think, let’s be honest, the reason for making that a holiday was under political duress, as a political hostage situation on the back of the death of George Floyd. And I think that that is not how we create holidays. We should not create holidays with a cultural gun to our head. And that’s what happened.” ***

Perfect politicians are almost always a plant, because they can afford to take positions knowing that they will never have to govern under them.

It seems he is running to draw support away from Trump so the Deep State candidate gets in instead.

Trump is the only exception that I can make about being a perfect politician not being a plant. All other politicians have the burden of trying to draw support from the population in general.

Juneteenth was a neat, local tradition celebrated in Texas, primarily by blacks. The reason for the vague date was known and the Galveston pronouncement is indeed worth celebrating if you are black. Many white Texans also enjoyed the low-key BBQ’s, cookouts, picnics and other family get-togethers on the appropriate date, but didn’t presume to take over the “holiday.”

However, liberals ruin everything they touch. Because Trump scheduled a rally in Tulsa, Oklahoma on the Juneteenth in 2020, liberals had a big fit and whined until he postponed it. Now it’s a NATIONAL holiday? Makes sense only to a liberal.

Not only that, but Junteenth Day just honors the proclamation itself. Slavery still continued for another year and a half.

It's the Kwanzaa of summer holidays.

Since Jackie Robinson never endured racist treatment any worse than today’s black players do, so we’re told, why all the rigamarole about #42?

All because someone in the media noticed Trump had a rally on that day.

Even Trump cucked out on it.

President Trump was great President for blacks. That’s one reason that it was stolen in 20.

I’m perfectly fine with anything that can be celebrated with beer and food.

However, Lincoln’s Birthday celebrates the great emancipator and George Washington’s Birthday celebrates the man who led the fight that made us an independent and then great country.

All of this reminds me of my schoolboy youth and Jewish holidays. As a fan of B&H Photo knows and my classmates knew, Jewish holidays are plentiful, as were Catholic holidays long ago.

Some of them still haven’t gotten the message.

“We will make Election Day a holiday in the United States of America, so there’s no complaints about it.”

There are plenty of people who will still have to work even if it is a “holiday”

If my more recent ancestors came from Africa, I’d celebrate Lincoln’s birthday with greater fervor than MLK Jr.’s birthday or June 19th.

A visit to MLK Jr.’s Ebenezer Baptist church in Atlanta comes with a chance to hear one of his sermons. He understood people.

There is an earlier thread on this, different article, where I wrote and again say here: Anyone supporting Indian anchor baby Ramaswamy on FR hasn’t been reading the threads about him here. So funny to watch the predictable knee-jerk responses supporting him because he parroted something somebody liked. Juneteenth does more to out people ignorant about why this holiday is important and how this is a natural Republican holiday. Opposition to celebrating the Republican led end slavery is easily viewed as racist.

The fact that we made a national holiday JUST to make Trump look bad for having a rally on the same day that no one outside of Texas has ever heard of is probably one of the more pathetic displays of our cowardly political class.

How about Tax And Spend Relief Holiday? No taxes and no government spending, if for at least one day. Do something for the citizens, not the government unions,
