An Army installation in Texas has been struggling to put food on the table for its soldiers for months as the base faces a shortage of cooks to staff its dining facilities.
Fort Cavazos, Texas, previously known as Fort Hood, has struggled to provide its junior enlisted troops with meals for months, with the base only opening two of its 10 major dining facilities for much of the summer and with limited times, according to a report Tuesday from Military.com.
According to the report, the base has faced a shortage of cooks to man the dining facilities around base, with many Army cooks either on deployment or away on field training. Soldiers who depend on the dining facilities to eat have also faced confusing and conflicting opening schedules for the facilities as base officials attempt to move personnel around to staff the food service buildings.

Funny (sort of) T-Shirt I once saw.
This is purely a General Officer problem. Hire more Army cooks from within the ranks. Assign more enlisted and NCO personnel to this activity. Give the NCOs the freedom to function. Same for the junior officers in charge. Exceedingly poor leadership. Let’s Go Brandon!

Shows you what is running the military ... fat lazy drunks and freaks. Can’t even run a messhall ... should do really good in a shooting war.
There is no excuse for this - all of the taskings for cooks at Ft. Irwin, Ft. Knox, overseas, etc. were easily foreseeable. Someone (at the General level, though at lower levels as well) should be held accountable for this and punished.
Hey “base officials” get your butts out of the chair and go help.
Plenty of work peeling potatoes..washing up...serving the meals for the fighting force.
The ambulance was for members of the other services who fainted when seeing how good the Air Force ate. Even going to the field you ate good.
I’ll cook.
Thanks for sharing that.
I left the army after I came home from VN so missed all that.
I was a grunt and we did pretty amazing things with condiments stolen (with a wink and a nod from the mess sgts) from mess halls to make our C rations tastier. We had no MREs in those days.
Anyone can cook. Recipes are already created. The process just has to be followed.
It will always be Fort Hood to decent Americans.
Assign junior E and O personnel to mess crank duties.
Ditto that!
Fort Hood, the third-largest U.S. military base, was renamed Fort Cavazos on Tuesday to honor a Hispanic American Army leader rather than a Confederate general.
