Ecuador presidential candidate Fernando Villavicencio was shot dead during a campaign event in northern Quito on Wednesday night, according to Reuters.
A suspect in the killing of Villavicencio later died from injuries sustained during a shootout, the attorney general's office said on Twitter.
"A suspect, who was injured during the shootout with security personnel, was apprehended and moved, badly injured, to the (attorney general's) unit in Quito. An ambulance from the fire department confirmed his death, the police are proceeding with collection of the cadaver," the attorney general's office said.
Villavicencio's party Movimiento Construye said on armed men attacked its Quito offices.
President Guillermo Lasso confirmed the murder on Twitter and wrote, "For his memory and his fight, I assure you that this crime will not remain unpunished. Organized crime have gone very far, but all the weight of the law will fall on them."
Lasso said he would host top security officials at an urgent meeting.

Lasso is not a candidate in the Aug. 20 vote. Villavicencio had been a member of the Assembly from 2017 until Lasso dissolved it.
This was the first assassination of a presidential candidate in Ecuador, “once a relatively safe nation” that “has been consumed by violence related to narco-trafficking in the last five years,” The New York Times reported. Foreign drug mafias have joined forces with “local prison and street gangs, unleashing a wave of violence unlike anything in the country’s recent history. Homicide rates are at record levels,” and “the violence is often horrific and public, meant to induce fear and exert control.”

With 3 indictments and not a single dip in the polls, they are about to roll out the Georgia indictment, and from what it sounds like Smith is about to roll out some sort of fundraising indictment, making it 5 indictments. Just how many phony indictments can they come up with, maybe a dozen, maybe more?
It wouldn’t surprise me any if they would go this route, probably utilizing one of Trump’s Secret Service security detail members, apparently, some of them were moles planted inside Mar a Lago.

They’re not going to convict. It won’t even get to the juries, with these farkakteh legal theories. SCOTUS will see to that. And campaigning from prison has been done. Eugene V. Debs, 1918. Spoke out against American involvement in the war and was imprisoned. He was a socialist. Trump is not. And he’s coopted their supposed base, the working class, and made them believers in non-crony capitalism.
If Woody Guthrie were around today, he’d be a MAGA Republican, and composing songs about illegal immigration, the J6 scam, Covid, and the “glorious triumph” of Afghanistan.
