So, I guess the fact that the leeward side of Maui is ALWAYS very dry this time of year. In addition, the cane or pinapple fields (which were where the burning started) have not been tended to (I heard), and that hurricane that brushed by had high winds. Summary, pretty typical conditions for August in Maui. (I lived there doing obersations on the adaptive optics telescope there.)

Climate change, my Obamahole.

The hurricane had nothing to do with the wind on Maui. Much too far away, over 600 miles. A large hurricane can have a non-zero effect on wind up to 500 miles, but Dora was a compact hurricane. The 39 mph winds from Dora extended 100 miles to the north.

The weather service said Dora had an effect (pressure gradient) but that was an incorrect forecast that was never corrected.
