Rep. Nicole Malliotakis, R-N.Y., is calling for Staten Island to break away from the rest of New York City over Democrat Mayor Eric Adams’ handling of the migrant crisis.
“What we’re simply asking is, for common sense. We want the mayor to end this. Stop doing what you’re doing and listen. Secure the damn border. We do not have a border. We do not have a nation,” Malliotakis said during a protest at a former Catholic school turned migrant shelter in the borough.
“If you’re not going to do your job, mayor, then let Staten Island secede.”
The call was met with cheers and applause from the hundreds of attendees. Staten Island makes up a large part of Malliotakis’ district, which also includes part of Brooklyn. It’s a district that mostly voted for former President Donald Trump in 2020 despite New York City’s blue stronghold status. …

Not sure how much control the Mayor has over the border.
It makes for good politics but it’ll never happen. Staten Island’s last secession movement ended in the 1990s when the residents of that borough learned how much higher their taxes would be without the city’s property tax revenue from Manhattan’s priciest neighborhoods.
Folks, ignore Adams, Hochul, and Biden pointing fingers and blaming each other. It’s a classic Communist tactic. Behind the scenes, these fighting-age military illegals are getting ready to invade suburban and rural areas. The Left cannot allow Trump to regain power.
Staten Island voted for Trump in 2016 & 2020.
That’s not what happened. A majority voted for secession in 1993, but the state legislature stymied the effort.
I never trusted those studies.
51st state, ahead of DC.
Or else no more crybaby DC statehood BS.
That’s not what happened.
Eh?
It sounds good, “the state of Staten”!!!
1st: not serious.
2nd: DC has had bumper stickers and license plate holders with “Taxation Without Representation” and black leaders making speeches about statehood for DC. Would be 2 Dem US senators, a Dem governor, Electoral College votes and the rest forever.
If Staten Island shouldn’t secede or become a state of the union then DC should shut up, too.
Fair enough.
Staten Island merely wants to secede from New York City, though, not the state. AFAIC, Article IV Section 3 of the US Constitution doesn’t apply here.
Probably has a bigger population than wyoming
I surrender. You are right.
I have read this inadequate book American Secession by F.H. Buckley. It mainly concludes the problems of who pays for the US defense bills and who gets the tax money and so on make it a fantasy. He did correctly predict investing money in UHaul and others was smart (and migration to other states to get away from people we hate was one of his themes.)
I saw a reference to this Buckley (not a William F. Buckley relative) being an early Trump supporter but I heard an interview where he laughed at the chances of Trump winning in 2024——something I don’t find amusing in the slightest.
Wyoming has over 100K more at this point.
Won’t help if they don’t secure their elections.
We’ve all seen how Yankees treat secession. Even though they believed it was a right, they destroyed the States that believed it was clearly a right.
Perhaps Staten Island could become a part of Texas.
But the state legislature didn't "stymie" anything. They just ignored it.
All the secession talk ended anyway when Giuliani was elected mayor in 1993 and he shut down the Fresh Kills landfill and eliminated the fare for the Staten Island Ferry.
