The equity and inclusion committee at Oakland’s Chabot Elementary School didn’t publish the emails and phone numbers of organizers when advertising its “playdate” for students of color on Aug. 26.
“Something told me not to do it,” said Briana, the co-chair of the committee who is Black, has a child who attends the school and asked that I not use her last name due to safety concerns. “Maybe it was my ancestors talking to me.”
Those ancestors must have known racism is still thriving in the nation. The Bay Area is no exception.
Two days after the playdate, hate mail, racist phone calls and bomb threats were sent to the school and several Oakland residents after extremists online deemed the event an affront to their delusional idea of equality. About 30 students and staff members were safely evacuated from the school before classes began. Parents dropping their kids off for school were told to go home. Police eventually swept the campus with bomb-detecting dogs but turned up nothing suspicious.
“Creating spaces for Black, brown and AAPI kids is seen as some kind of zero-sum game for people who are against it,” said Macheo Payne, a professor of social work at Cal State East Bay. “They ask where the white spaces are, which disregards how those spaces exist by default in society.”

"Racists tried to stop segregation that violates civil rights." is a fun one.

COLUMN: "Racists tried to vilify an Oakland elementary school for organizing a playdate specifically for Black, Latino and AAPI families. Their hate reinforced the importance of these safe spaces," writes Justin Phillips.

What a bunch of sickos.
AAPI?
They’re racist psychopaths declaring they’re perpetual victims. Their whole world is all about their skin color. It’s a shake down. These groups are mostly about trying to put dollars in their pockets. They simple ignore the fact there are black folk who are brain surgeons, senators, etc. They really do a disservice to blacks who’ve achieved.
Kids see kids; they do not see race. They have to be taught to be racists, and they are being taught to be racists here.
Who in the Hell cares about a playdate and so what if they want to be racist about it and exclude whites?
All people of Asian, Asian American, or Pacific Islander ancestry.
So much of this Commie left jackassery is being orchestrated from these universities.
This is actually good. Whites need to do the same and ignore the inevitable name-calling and smears from clowns at the ADL.
So an elementary school has an equity and inclusion committee? What? I’m sure the Bay Area media is desperately looking for a “Proud Boy” or Trump supporter to pin this one on.
The segregation within the POC has begun.
So they want to bring segration back eh
>> What a bunch of sickos.
The race-baiting editors at the Chronicle?
Never heard that term before
Bullcrap.
They and exclude minorities deliberately and see just how freely these alleged white spaces exist.
Yep. Some people see racism regardless of whether it exists or not. They must live a miserable, pathetic existence.
This is racist. And I don’t see how it’s legal either since it’s being done by the school. Shame on them.
So if you live on Balboa Island or Lido Island in Newport Harbor, Calif., which are high-rent mostly white communities, you could call yourself an AAPI and get all sorts of government favors as part of an officially recognized oppresed minority group.
Like Ben Carson, Morgan Freeman, Tim Scott, Candace Owens, Kanye West and James Earl Jones.
Somehow very much doubt that the people who complained about this event were members of the very small remaining white community that uses Oakland’s public schools. This reaction came from within the communities that were once rightly called minorities but now are the majority within Oakland. Suburban and ex urban whites would not be aware or the truth be told not care about such an event. That fact is probably what bothers the people of Oakland more than anything. Suspect these threats were political theatre.
