Sometime back in the early nought’s, there was a big to-do about some town, I think it was in Wyoming, that had to get rid of their police department. Every story about it was accompanied by dire predictions and “poor helpless townspeople”.
Then it actually happened, and the articles disappeared.
Roughly one year later, someone on a forum I was on mentioned that they live in that area. I asked for his view of what happened after the local police disbanded. According to him, there was a brief period where crooks thought they could get away with everything.
It only took about a week for them to realize, police hadn’t been protecting their victims from the crooks. They had been protecting the crooks from their victims!!!
It turns out, having the police to rely on actually makes law-abiding citizens LESS inclined to use deadly force! Now that the police were gone, every crime became punishable by death.
According to this person, by the end of the third week, any criminally-inclined person who survived was either moving out, or was following the law.
I admit, this is my memory of a conversation that took place more than 10 years ago, and I have no proof the person who told me this actually lived where he said he did. Therefore, I wouldn’t exactly call this reliable testimony. But, it will be very interesting to see if the results are the same in other towns!
Yup. Nothing in my house or on my person is worth dying for.
