There are conservative Methodists and there are leftist Methodists. That is the divide.
I heard a priest observe that one could take blocks of wood, write "denominational" names on each, with a "traditional" versus "progressive" label written on each, stack them all, and cut the pile n half, separating them into two piles. He said the "traditional" are more alike between and among themselves, than they are to the similarly named denominations, such that there are now failing denominations and recovering denominations after the schisms. I find the image most apt.
