What is an American bully XL and should they be banned?
BBC ^ | 12th September 2023 | Matt Murphy

An attack this weekend on a young girl and two men by an American bully dog has reignited debate over whether the breed should be banned in the UK.

The largest type, the American bully XL, can weigh more than nine stone (60kg) and are strong enough to overpower an adult.

This weekend's incident was the latest involving the breed, they have been involved in several fatal attacks.

Owners, however, insist that despite their fearsome appearance and build, the dogs make loveable household pets.

What is the American bully? American bullies are said to have originated in the US in the late 1980s, when American pit bull terriers and American Staffordshire terriers were crossed.

They have been crossed with other breeds to create an even more muscular dog.

The United Kennel Club in the US says that an American bully "makes an excellent family dog".

"Despite its powerful appearance their demeanour is gentle and friendly," it says, but also notes that "dog aggression is characteristic of this breed".

...American bullies have been involved in several high-profile attacks.

In April, a 65-year-old grandmother was killed after she tried to break up a fight between her two American bullies at her home in Liverpool. The coroner noted that she had been found with "catastrophic injuries".

Last year a 17-month-old toddler was mauled to death in her own home by one of the dogs in St Helens, just a week after her family had bought it.

And in 2021, 10-year-old Jack Lis died from severe neck and head injuries after he was attacked by an American bully XL in Caerphilly. His mother, Emma Whitfield, has called for the dogs to be banned.

I’m ready to require a specific license with insurance training and extreme liability.

Keeping a vicious dog is not covered in the Constitution

Concur. Liability is yours if your chihuahua/pit bull bites anyone.

You cant walk around with a hyena or dingo on a leash. Can I let my pet leapord free range in the back yard?

All the breeding has ruined these breeds. They are all just pit bull muts now. No distinction.

I worked on a laundromat once where the owner got robbed, so he put his 2 bull mastiff dogs in the mat at night. They were massive. No way would I go into the place until he brought them home for the day

These dogs kill all by themselves, much like the media would have you believe guns do. They are always the “sweetest” dogs...until they chew on someone’s jugular.

“insurance training”?

Extreme liability is not helpful if a dog belonging to an inexperienced owner mauls your two year old.

I’m about to make a TON of enemies on FR.

I’m not a fan of dogs. I’ve been attacked by too many. Keeping a dog is fine, and I really don’t care but they are about on par with keeping a snake. A dog seems to show love at some point, and responds to environmental factors better than snakes but snakes and dogs are about the same level of safety.

If you are a dog owner and you just told me to go eff myself under your breath, you’re really not going to like the next thing I have to type.

I am about to defend the shit out of pitbulls. The mere population comparisons of these breeds should explain this away. The commonality of the pitbull is where the attack figures lie. I mean sheesh, when the last time anyone ever even saw a Doberman?

The pitbulls are also mostly found in areas where you can distinctly hear a rap song playing in earshot. In the country the dog attacks are mutt-on-doordash-driver wherein the dog is so feral that it may as well be a coyote.

The whole thing is good pets being owned by indecent, stupid people. That goes for those tiny little half pound things that bite and attack everything to the big ones intended to safeguard something. Anything. Yes, I’m looking at you.

We loved our black lab, and thought he was pretty docile, but one day some folks came over to visit, and they put their face up to the front door window to let us know it was them nicking, and I was walking to the front door and grabbed the dog by the collar just to be safe, and wheni opened the door, the dog launched at their face, taking me by surprise. I was able to hold the dog back, but it was a wakeup call.

We also had a sheepdog, which was a really friendly dog... u ti, it wasn’t. Certain people it would just go mental over. Ups driver for 1. Had to keep her in the house when deliveries were made.

I think, there is more to it than how many there are- these dogs were bred to fight, and likely have a screw loose to boot. One never knows what will set them off. Many stories about owners being bit too- for no ascernible reason it seems. Other breeds do t tend to attack their owners or toher family members nearly as much as pits seem to do on average.

All dogs have the potential to snap- some are just more apt to than others.

Like Staffordshire isn't in England and terriers didn't come from Britain ...

I’ve been a lot more worried about some people I’ve seen with pitbulls than the dogs.

Pits are bread to fight.

Just like shepherds want to wrangle, and retrievers want to fetch, and hounds stick their nose into everything and terriers want to chase little things like cats do, breeding is powerful. Pits don’t have the same fear other dogs do, and they are lovey dovey dogs inside the home with their owners, but when they get loose, and particularly when they are being territorial, they don’t get half-aggressive and half-afraid like other dogs do and put up threat displays, they just plain get aggressive.
