In Move to Slash CDC Budget, House Republicans Target Major HIV Program Trump Launched
KFF Health News ^ | Sept 8, 2023 | Andy Miller and Sam Whitehead

More than four years ago, then-President Donald Trump declared an ambitious goal that had bipartisan support: ending the HIV epidemic in the United States.

Now, that Trump program is one of several health initiatives targeted for substantial cuts by members of his own party as they eye next year’s elections.

Pushing a slate of conservative political priorities that also takes aim at sex education for teens, health worker vaccine mandates, and more, Republicans in the House of Representatives have proposed a spending bill that would cut $1.6 billion from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention — one-sixth of the agency’s budget.

A laudable move by the current Republican congress.

Fund your own highly-preventable diseases, perverts. The rest of us shouldn't be on the hook for a single penny because of your willfull, filthy habits.

Republicans will make cuts targeting potential Trump voters in order to poison the well for 2024. Trump is probably making gains in the gay community. So they cut a program that is fiscally a drop in the bucket to alienate gay voters who were considering voting republican. Republicans will also likely cut welfare programs because Trump is making substantial gains in the black community. Of course the republican party has helped Biden pass 4 trillion in NEW spending so far. Yeah, they’re really worried about spending.

There is a reason the major pharma companies are relying on government to fund the research. AIDS is a virus. There has never been a cure found for any virus. A virus must run its course. Big pharma is more than happy to take Uncle Sugar’s money to say they are working on a cure. They get a ton of money without any risk. If there were really a chance of curing AIDS, they would sink their own research money into it. If the government really wants to stop the spread, they should quarantine those who have it. They were perfectly willing to quarantine the whole country for the Chinese flu, weren’t they?

And the only way they’ll get this spending bill passed is if they continue to collaborate with the commies.

Agreed-

Of all the crapola to cut, START with the relative pennies of 1.6 B for HIV?
Like the Abortion Ban talk just before the election last time.
The Deep State knows sabotage, in all it’s forms.

Yes, most viruses have no “cure”.

But for many viruses, including that causing AIDS, medicaal science has found means to reduce/lower the replication of a virus that remains within us, to offset or counter the ill effects of a virus, and strengthen the immune system’s ability against viruses and bacteria that may try to exploit weakened conditions induced by a virus. They are not “cures” but they are more than just “waiting a virus out”, which in some cases, with some viruses, such inactive response means death, versus a longer life living with a virus.

“...ending the HIV epidemic in the United States.”

There is, of curse a simple method to ‘end the HIV epidemic’ that requires little if any funding, but mentioning it constitutes a hate crime.

I would love to withhold from you any treatment fruit of your poisonous tree, that is anything touched by research connected with immunology, HIV, virology, etc.

The battle with HIV has challenged medical science to add vast amounts of knowledge which has had wide ranging benefits.

22% of new cases are heterosexual transmissions, 14% to women. 7% are drug related. Blacks make up 42% of new cases and Latinos 27%.

1.2 million Americans are living with HIV. This cut amounts to about $1300 per person if only they pay the bill. Far more taxpayers are at risk. It’s a cheap investment with a huge payoff.

We both know why you celebrate the cut proposed. Because you enjoy knowing these targets will suffer as a result.

This is definitely sabotage when you see who is directly effected most by HIV: Blacks, Latinos, gays and bisexuals. Their money spends too. Their votes count too.

I'm trying to see through your innuendo but it's hazy. If you're suggesting killing all gays would cure the world of HIV? That won't work. Straight dudes get it too, even Magic Johnsons.

So are you suggesting putting down anyone that contracts the virus, but you're just too chicken to say it? About a million Americans have HIV - are you offering up your services to assasinate them all? Some are kids- just saying.

Interesting how trying to look tough sometimes has the opposite effect.

My ‘innuendo’ was to ask HIV-positive men to refrain from engaging in unprotected sex. Perhaps from refraining from multiple sex partners might also slow the spread of the disease. Wasn’t thinking of ‘putting down’ anyone. Why would you even think such a thing?

To give your cowardly post a better response than it deserves- your "innuendo" is pretty much CDC guidance, and suggesting it will NEVER get you prosecuted for a hate crime.

But you knew that already. Congrats for being on the side of kicking your fellow Americans down and out - sometimes through no fault of their own.

The republican Senate passed 4 trillion in NEW spending for Biden in just 2 years, 100+ billion for Ukraine and climbing. Now republicans want spending cuts for HIV. It sounds random but it’s definitely not.

OK, ‘hate crime’ might well have been over the top, I’ll give you that. But it has been suggested that asking gay men from practicing random, anonymous sex is somehow ‘anti-gay’. When the disease first broke out, attempting to close S.F.’s ‘bathhouses’ was condemned. And it was repeated with the monkey-pox outbreak, to the extent that the disease’s name was changed to prevent anti-gay bigotry.

I don’t want anyone to get infected with HIV and I would hope that those infected are able to get effective treatment. But the disease is primarily contracted by behavior—behavior that can be avoided or modified. Smokers who contract lung cancer aren’t given the pity or political support that HIV sufferers are.

All I have said is that HIV cases can be reduced at little government cost by significant changes in the behavior of its suffers. I can’t imagine why that idea seems to bother you so much.

I don’t want them dead and I’m not kicking them when they are down.

All good on the "hate crime" stuff. I am over the top too sometimes, so no throwing stones from glass houses.

I am going to argue this statement though: Smokers who contract lung cancer aren’t given the pity or political support that HIV sufferers are.

That's just not true based on anything statistical, but again, I guess it sounds good on the Internet.

On average Americans have a 6% chance of winning the lung cancer raffle. When you drill in, your odds are 30x better if you smoke tobacco. The average cost of lung cancer chemotherapy is over $6k per month for the initial phase.

Hopefully you're aware of the size of the tobacco lobby and their ability to minimize smoking cessation in America for the last century. I also hope you don't believe that the vast majority of lung cancer patients, who have contracted the disease through behavior, are paying all those costs out of pocket.

Their cost is averaged into your premium, and is underwritten by tobacco companies who have a lobbying power far greater than the HIV lobby.

Everyone has AIDS
AIDS, AIDS, AIDS
AIDS, AIDS, AIDS
AIDS, AIDS, AIDS
Everyone has AIDS

And so this is the end of our story
And everyone is dead from AIDS
It took from me my best friend, my only true pal
My only bright star
(He died of AIDS)

Well I’m gonna march on Washington
Lead the fight and charge the brigades
There’s a hero inside of all of us
I’ll make them see everyone has AIDS

My Father
(AIDS)
My sister
(AIDS)
My uncle and my cousin and her best friend
(AIDS, AIDS, AIDS)

The gays and the straights and the white and the spades
Everyone has AIDS

My grandma and my dog ‘ol blue
(AIDS, AIDS, AIDS)
The pope has got it and so do you
(AIDS, AIDS, AIDS, AIDS, AIDS)
C’mon everybody we got quilting to do
(AIDS, AIDS, AIDS, AIDS, AIDS)

We gotta break down these barricades, everyone has
AIDS, AIDS, AIDS
AIDS, AIDS, AIDS
AIDS, AIDS, AIDS

Why isn’t the CDC working to stop the result of HIV infection, which is premature aging of 14 years? That is why HIV infected get more cancers: they get old people diseases. Plus, they are guaranteed to die at least 14 years early. This happens even if HIV infected are taking PrEP.

Regarding your mindless screed, just remember that if you want more of something, you subsidize it. And this is EXACTLY what the HIV funding does. It gives tacit permission, sometimes even overt permission, to keep engaging in the types of high-risk behaviors which keep HIV/AIDS proliferating in this population.

Much, if not MOST of the demanded funding is for “HIV prevention,” meaning, if you know how to read between the lines, enabling homosexuals to keep up the filthy behaviors that transmit HIV will a little less risk.

HIV/AIDS will NEVER be eradicated, or even substantially reduced, until the behavior is addressed. If you think it will, you’re stupider than you give yourself credit for.

Homosexuals were never healthier, on the whole, than when their behavior was nearly universally condemned in society, and certainly not affirmed and subsidized. It wasn’t until this societal censure began being removed in the early 70’s, first by the APA, that diseases, notably AIDS, exploded in this population, and spilled over to kill innocents.
