Sydney Airport EV Fire Destroys 5 Vehicles

Five cars have been destroyed at Sydney Airport after a battery from a luxury electric car burst into flames.

About 8.30pm on Monday, firefighters were called to a parking lot on Airport Drive in Mascot after flames engulfed a luxury electric car before spreading to another four vehicles.

Research officers from Fire and Rescue’s Safety of Alternative and Renewable Energy Technologies team have also been at the scene.

Fire and Rescue NSW Superintendent Adam Dewberry said … “There had been some problem with the car and the battery had been removed, we believe that the car has suffered some mechanical damage which can contribute to a battery breaking down and catching fire without notice.

“We don’t have a concern about this broadly, it’s not often that electric cars catch fire.”

Fire departments now having a "Fire and Rescue’s Safety of Alternative and Renewable Energy Technologies team" indicates the hazards of EV autos over standard transportation vehicles.

Governments want to increase the number of EVs by tenfold or more, which will increase the likelihood of EV fire incidents by a like number. And these are some serious fires!

Requiring fire departments to have dedicated EV fire units is a sad & serious trend. All so unnecessary!

Odd. It was a battery sitting out to the side, taken out of a MG ZS EV (I'd hardly call that a "luxury" EV).

Perhaps. I figure the EV owner, the owners of the other cars destroyed or damaged and anyone witnessing or even in the area of the destruction will not be in the market for buying an EV.
