As a kid, I was living at air force bases in the 1950's-1960's when all of the Right Stuff was happening. We saw the flight suits around the base, attended memorial services for friends fathers and we saw the hardware develop from F-84s to mach 2 jets.
We hero worshipped the Mercury 7 astronauts and even listened to Sheppard's, Grissom's and Glenn's flights on radio in the classroom in elementary school.
Wolfe's book captured those times perfectly.
