My New York City apartment doesn't have a lot going for it. It's 700 square feet. The master bedroom fits little more than a queen-sized bed. There's no kitchen pantry. My baby son sleeps in a large closet. But I'm a cook, and it does have at least one thing that keeps me renewing the lease year after year: a four-burner gas stove.
Gas ranges allow cooks a greater degree of control over heat, from which flavor and texture result. But for the next generation of New York cooks, that feature will be even more of a rarity.
Starting this year, gas stove hookups will be banned in newly constructed buildings under seven stories throughout the five boroughs. The 90-year-old brownstone I live in, which was renovated and divided into four units in 2019, will be grandfathered in. Starting in 2027, this regulation will also apply to taller buildings. Inspired by city regulators, state lawmakers passed a similar ban in May. Now, New Yorkers who like high-heat and precise temperature control will be out of luck regardless of whether they live in Buffalo or Bushwick.
Over on the Left Coast, Berkeley adopted a similar ban in 2019, which was overturned by the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals this April. More than 50 other California cities, from Los Angeles to Sacramento, have adopted copycat regulations over the last five years which are now in legal limbo. Then in January, the feds got on board: Consumer Product Safety Commissioner Richard L. Trumka Jr. called gas stoves "a hidden hazard" and made noises about possibly banning them, saying—ominously, to libertarian ears—"products that can't be made safe can be banned."

I have been shopping for a replacement. It's abysmal. I'm thinking of going into the hood and buying a restaurant stove from a junk guy. I can de-roach it outside before I bring it in.
Even the new electric ones have a safety interlock button for every burner unit on the stove top. They won't heat or light without the weight of a pan or pot on the burner. Forget sautéing your food. It will shut off every time you lift the pan.

We got an old Maytag washer after our “new” washer broke down. It ACTUALLY cleans the clothes and we don’t have to add scented pearls because they stink with the water reduction.

Yep. But here’s the thing. The Constitution is very clear. Only Congress - a body elected by the people - is permitted to make the rules. The executive branch can only carry out those rules. The executive branch cannot make the rules.
Unfortunately, Congress has allowed their power to slip away. As you noted, unelected bureaucrats now make policy. Congress does not push back.
I guess they’re too busy trying to make their wealthy donors happy.
All this environmental stuff is starting to cross racial, cultural and economic lines. Where are the republicans who should be leveraging this to their benefit?
Is that what it is? I can’t figure out why our clothes and towels still have a smell after washing even though I use a nice smelling softener. I never do like the way our washer uses so little water yet it advertised as the best in cleaning your clothes. Wow.

The degree of cleaning clothes is directly proportionate to the volume of water used. Use little water, your clothes don't get clean. The use of cold water to clean filthy clothes always puzzled me? I'm not sure who pitched that joke? Ever try to wash your dirty hands in the kitchen sink with one cup of cold water? No! You need hot water, and plenty of it.
I used to be a big Fels Naprha soap fan. Had been for 50 years. Well apparently the brand sold because California lited the Napthalene as a toxic cancer causing agent and in violation of Prop 65. A new company bought Fels Naptha brand but reformulated out the napthalene. It's useless now.
My Neptune's became target practice at 200 yards. I hope Maytag management become targets at 20 feet.

Not anymore. They need a cooking vessel on the burner to stay lit. The oven and burners have limiting timers on how long a burner can stay lighted. Walk away and in a half hour it has shut itself off if you were clever enough to put a three gallon pot of water on the stove top to get heat if your electric is out. Oven too. It’s now a :safety feature” being required.

Oh, yes. Last January my electricity went out for three days. Yet I (and my cat) survived. I lit a burner on my gas stove. It ran almost continuously. My kitchen was toasty warm. So here I am today, alive and well.
But this is important! I opened a nearby window. And I put a carbon monoxide detector in my kitchen. No sense surviving a cold spell only to die of carbon monoxide poisoning.
Please, no one is going to ban ceiling fans. Stop fomenting hate. But, for your safety, we need to register them.

I bought a new LG washer about two years back and I am very happy with it.
