Trump calls six-week abortion bans ‘terrible’

Former president Donald Trump, the front-runner in the GOP presidential primary, said a state abortion law signed by his top challenger, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R), which bans the procedure after six weeks, is “terrible.”

In April, DeSantis signed the controversial law, which will go into effect if the Florida Supreme Court upholds the state’s 15-week ban on abortion that he signed into law last spring. At a hearing this month, the Florida justices appeared open to upholding the limiting ban.

Trump, in an interview that aired Sunday on NBC’s “Meet the Press,” criticized DeSantis for being “willing to sign a five-week and six-week ban.”

“I think what he did is a terrible thing and a terrible mistake,” Trump said.

DeSantis’s six-week ban — which includes exceptions for rape, incest, medical emergencies and “fatal fetal abnormalities” — would outlaw the procedure in Florida before many people know they’re pregnant.

The new host of “Meet the Press,” Kristen Welker, asked Trump if he’d sign federal legislation that would ban abortion at 15 weeks, a limit that antiabortion groups and some lawmakers have rallied behind.

Trump said no, and said he’d seek to negotiate with Democrats on the issue.

Trump declined to say what time frame he thinks is appropriate for an abortion ban and instead insisted that he would “sit down with both sides and I’d negotiate something, and we’ll end up with peace on that issue for the first time in 52 years.”

“Both sides are going to like me,” he added. “I’m going to come together with all groups, and we’re going to have something that’s acceptable.” ***

There can be no compromise when one side refuses to admit the humanity and right to life of the unborn baby. For them the woman is all powerful and can chose to kill her baby at any time prior to birth and for any reason at all. It doesn't matter if it's six weeks or 15 weeks along, it is STILL a human baby. I don't even think rape or incest justify it. It's not the baby's fault how he/she was conceived. The only valid exception should be if the mother's very life is jeopardized if the pregnancy continues. This is because BOTH the mother and baby would perish.

Abortion must become unthinkable for there to ever be peace on the issue. I'm disappointed that Trump failed to defend life. He's trying to appeal to both sides and that isn't possible.

He explicitly said he would be fine with it being a federal law.

‘Welker asked whether such an agreement would take place at the federal level.

“It could be state or it could be federal,” Trump said. “I don’t, frankly, care.”’

from post 47 you said

But Trump is saying he’d negotiate a federal law

Trump didn’t say either way, but you said he’d do a federal law

Like I said, you smear Trump.

It’s time to play another round of “WHAT TRUMP AKSHUALLY SAID WAS..!!!”
****************************************
Other than the word “sanctimonious” he doesn’t use words with more than three syllables, so it shouldn’t be hard. Two seems to be his comfort zone.

If he was able to ban it outright

The President doesn't make laws.

DeSantis is pissing around in Florida and Trump appointed judges that overturned Roe vs. Wade. That makes Trump the most consequential pro-life President since the awful law was enacted, period. It’s now a state’s issue. We don’t need Trump to be nailed down on anything related to abortion. He will be pro-life on his national policy decisions, that’s all that matters. The democrats a rinopublicans want the issue nationalized because it hurts republican candidates including Trump.

One that I know also was pregnant in utero. That child survived. Very scary situation for a while.

“Trump is playing this right. States’ rights is the way to go.”

Then he should STFU about Florida, which as I recall is a state.

He’s like a young robin with his mouth always open.

Trump’s position on abortion can be summed up as whatever seems apt for the party whose nomination he seeks.

LOL....

And Trump isn’t going to unilaterally change anything...

The supreme court made a ruling, and if there is going to be something national, then the house and senate can pass a law.

Otherwise, it’s a state issue.

If RDS said this, pro-Trump FReepers would be raining down hellfire on him. And they all know it.

How do you feel about DeSantis legalizing abortion before 6 weeks? Is that not baby murdering?

Should DeSantis have vetoed the 6-week ban that Florida's legislature gave him to sign?

Imagine what the response om FR would've been. "RINO DESANTIS VETOES PRO-LIFE BILL!!!"

People here are discussing electoral politics not philosophy.

You do understand that a candidate taking your position, a candidate you find “acceptable”, is committing suicide, right?

And that candidate will lose to someone who has wrong positions on many other issues besides abortion.

Don’t vote against your conscience. But don’t scorn people who want to win.

Trump is probably pro-abortion. I bet he’s paid for a few. But he got Roe v. Wade overturned, which is more - a lot more - than any other Republican has even come close to doing.

“Then he should STFU about Florida, which as I recall is a state.”

In case you haven’t noticed, there’s a presidential election going on and the 6 week limit was brought up for discussion in that context.

It can be tricky being a governor and navigating national political issues simultaneously, especially for a novice

Someone should slyly state “Safe, Legal and Rare”

How come nobody asks WHY abortion should be rare?

“Imagine what the response om FR would’ve been. “RINO DESANTIS VETOES PRO-LIFE BILL!!!””

I’m sure DeSantis was closely involved in the drafting of the legislation.

Or do you really believe he was surprised when it was presented to him

“I’m disappointed that Trump failed to defend life.”

The same can be said about DeSantis. Is there something magical about 6 weeks? Is a 41 day old less human than a 42 day old?

Did he really say it?

He’s been saying it ever since DeSantis signed the 6 week Abortion Ban Bill into law.

This abortion crap is costing us elections and the nation.

And there we have it. I knew it wouldn't take long before someone would justify abortions as they cost the GOP some votes.

Well guess what. If the GOP (including Trump) would get solidly on the anti-abortion train and quit trying to negotiate with Democrats, we would actually gain more votes.

Trump is part of the problem. And he can't stand the fact that DeSantis is correct in this abortion fight.

Agreed. Why can’t we both work to end abortion and offer support for women and families who truly believe abortion is the best (if not the only) solution to a pregnancy. Mind you it is my understanding that pro-life agencies already offer such help. To them being pro-life does not end with the baby’s birth.
