Trump calls six-week abortion bans ‘terrible’

Former president Donald Trump, the front-runner in the GOP presidential primary, said a state abortion law signed by his top challenger, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R), which bans the procedure after six weeks, is “terrible.”

In April, DeSantis signed the controversial law, which will go into effect if the Florida Supreme Court upholds the state’s 15-week ban on abortion that he signed into law last spring. At a hearing this month, the Florida justices appeared open to upholding the limiting ban.

Trump, in an interview that aired Sunday on NBC’s “Meet the Press,” criticized DeSantis for being “willing to sign a five-week and six-week ban.”

“I think what he did is a terrible thing and a terrible mistake,” Trump said.

DeSantis’s six-week ban — which includes exceptions for rape, incest, medical emergencies and “fatal fetal abnormalities” — would outlaw the procedure in Florida before many people know they’re pregnant.

The new host of “Meet the Press,” Kristen Welker, asked Trump if he’d sign federal legislation that would ban abortion at 15 weeks, a limit that antiabortion groups and some lawmakers have rallied behind.

Trump said no, and said he’d seek to negotiate with Democrats on the issue.

Trump declined to say what time frame he thinks is appropriate for an abortion ban and instead insisted that he would “sit down with both sides and I’d negotiate something, and we’ll end up with peace on that issue for the first time in 52 years.”

“Both sides are going to like me,” he added. “I’m going to come together with all groups, and we’re going to have something that’s acceptable.” ***

Ectopic pregnancies are not abortions and have never been regarded as abortions by the medical community. The woman doesnt want to abort the baby, thats not the underlying intent behind such a surgical procedure.

Read the posts to this thread; quite a few have said that ALL abortions ( THAT INCLUDES THOSE TO SAVE THE LIFE OF THE MOTHER! ) should be banned.

Your ability to ignore the actual meaning of inconvenient words come from Trump’s own mouth is admirable

Read all of the comments.

And there ARE a few other SERIOUS MEDICAL REASONS for abortions, as well.

This is a complicated situation, yet quite a few posters are hung up on the "absolutely NO abortions, under ANY circumstance" side of the matter. And THAT is a problem!

“This sealed my plans on ever voting for Trump again as he will “ negotiate” the murder of Babies with Satan’s minions??? Clearly Trump has not learned a darned thing...”

It’s a tricky, complex issue. As a Christian, I’m supposed to care more about the abortion issue than I do. I guess I’m not that good of a Christian.

I care more about our number one issue right now.... which is national security. We have terrorists pouring into our nation unfettered as we speak. If they manage to carry out their wet-dreamt-about goals... we probably won’t be around much longer to worry about “abortions” in America.

Our second most important issue is, of course, the failing economy. We are being Cloward-Pivened into another even greater depression. Again, abortion in America is about the last thing I’m worried about right now. It is not the issue that’s going to destroy us.

Do I need to be? Are you? I know enough to know the difference between ectopic pregnancies and abortions. The tip-off is they do ectopic pregnancy procedures at normal hospitals with highly reputable doctors. I know the vast majority of women who have this procedure don’t want the baby to die and they aren’t doing it out of convenience.

So are you a doctor? If so post all your credentials.

Ectopic pregnancies qualify as a medical reason to be able to get an abortion. Were the two cases you know of not able to be helped by doctors?

There are none. Doctors themselves admit their aren’t any. Ectopic pregnancies are not comsidered abortions and never have been regarded as one.

Understood about 6 weeks, but Trump has been naysaying any limits. There was some articles about this around two months ago when he first criticized DeSantis where it appears that he was okay up to birth. He hasn’t offered any clarification and no answer is not good enough, even if it is a state issue since the federal government and military are involved as well.

He needs to be specific. Six week is the same as No, so is 12 or 15 something Trump agrees with, or is he okay with states allowing up to birth, maybe even at birth?

I do not need to be an OB/Gyn to know what the procedure is called. Since I personally know two different women who had to have the procedure done to remove the still live fetus, it was referred to as an abortion…. It probably called a laparotomy…. On the insurance form. The events I am personally familiar happened near thirty years ago, and was treated like a death in the family.

They both required surgery. Both referred to the procedure as an abortion. Both were very much grieved to lose their child. It was not a choice, it literally was life or death if nothing was done. In one case there was an in utero pregnancy and that child was delivered full term..

Its not an abortion. Its either a laparoscopy, or a laparotomy. The people going through this sole purpose is not that they don’t want to have a baby. Hospitals with respected doctors who do not do abortions, perform this procedure, abortion mills do not.

Trump said no, and said he’d seek to negotiate with Democrats on the issue.

Oh my God! I hope he didn't really say that.

Think about what you are saying. There is no sense in insisting that we “must do” what is impossible. Pipe dreams just use up energy that should be used to move forward incrementally.

To: Alas Babylon!

Women aren’t in constant pain or torture throughout their pregnancy. Some even have easy labor. My friend did with her first baby. The second baby was less cooperative but made it safely into the world after a tussle with the umbilical cord around her neck during birth.

As to what God thinks about all this, you might find the answer to your question in a list of verses from His Word at:

It was called an abortion. That is how it was described to me. The procedure was done in hospital. How many children have you birthed?

Trump is referring to exceptions past the heartbeat limit for rape, incest and the health of the woman.
