(WHNT) — The millions of people who use the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) to help cover the cost of groceries and other necessities are about to get a bump in their benefits starting on Oct. 1.

SNAP, which stands for Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, used to be called the Food Stamp Program. Next month, the benefits will automatically rise to reflect the recent changes in the cost of living due to high inflation.

Benefit changes will be based on the Consumer Price Index from the Bureau of Labor Statistics for June 2022.

According to a report from Forbes Advisor, SNAP benefits will increase by 12.5% for 12 months starting in October, compared to the year prior.

Below you can see the breakdowns of new maximum benefit amounts in the 48 contiguous U.S. states and D.C., according to the USDA:

Household size 1 – $291 Household size 2 – $535 Household size 3 – $766 Household size 4 – $973 Household size 5 – $1,155 Household size 6 – $1,386 Household size 7 – $1,532 Household size 8 – $1,751

If Josiah and Alix love SNAP so much, they need half of their paychecks to be distributed to it. See if they still like it after that

This is Great news, I am doing a lot to lower my taxable income below the threshold for 2 people. My goal is to get an EBT card, jump in my plane with my Wife, Fly to Vegas and have a nice meal at the Bellagio, using my EBT card to pay of course, then flying back home. Should be a fun evening!!! About $400 in fuel round trip but I get a free meal!

I don’t necessarily complain about the increase, but I have a huge problem with what can be purchased with these benefits.

Medicare beneficiaries now get a $50/quarter account to purchase approved supplements, medicines, wound care items, etc., aka OTC. These are clearly marked as such in Walgreens (and I’m sure other places), and Amazon now has OTC approved items.

So the process is established. Just implement the same with SNAP/EBT cards. Limit eligible items to real food items. Or exclude non-real food items.

Americans eat like shit. There is no cogent argument otherwise. We can prevent a LOT of expensive, deadly diseases and conditions by getting people to eat right. And the lower the income, on balance, the worse people eat.

Those are the maximum amounts for respective family sizes, basically given negligible income. With income the amounts drop off drastically. I know someone with a just-over minimum wage income who doesn’t qualify for any amount.

“Medicare beneficiaries now get a $50/quarter account to purchase approved supplements, medicines, wound care items, etc., aka OTC”

That’s a feature of certain Part C plans, not a part of standard Medicare.

Most folks are stunningly confused by Medicare Parts A,B,C,D.

It is like combining apples, oranges, peaches and lemons and calling them apples.

I saw a Medicare Advantage plan that was far more generous (with other people’s money) than just $50/month for food and supplements and things. It was zero premium and hundreds of dollars/month.

Fair enough. But it is part of my plan. And I pay $0 additional premiums.

But the point is that the analogous technology, systems, and procedures already exist. Congress could do the same for SNAP/EBT in very short order.

But SS will never see that kind of increase.
