House GOP in no rush to give more Ukraine aid after $6 billion error
Defense News via Yahoo ^ | September 20th, 2023 | Bryant Harris

WASHINGTON ― House Republicans who have previously supported Ukraine are in little rush to approve a fifth round of aid amid growing skepticism within their caucus.

The Pentagon says it still has roughly $5.5 billion worth of authority to keep transferring weapons to Kyiv, even though the last Ukraine aid package Congress passed is set to expire at the end of the month.

How? Pentagon lawyers argue that they can use the remaining drawdown authority indefinitely due to a complicated confluence of circumstances arising from the Biden administration miscalculating the value of Ukraine military aid earlier this year.

The miscalculation has prompted an audit from the Pentagon Inspector General, but it’s also given the Defense Department more leeway to keep arming Ukraine even if Congress fails to pass the White House’s latest $25 billion supplemental request in military and economic aid for Kyiv. It also means Republicans who have voted for Ukraine aid in the past don’t feel much urgency to pass another package, even with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy set to travel to Capitol Hill to persuade them otherwise on Thursday.

It doesn't matter that much if the Pentagon keep transferring old weapons stocks to Ukraine.

What matter is whether there will be additional cash payments to the Ukrainian government so that they can continue operations. Because without the cash transfers they'll collapse nearly overnight.

And there'll be hangings in the streets.

The pentagon is incompetent and corrupt like all of Washington...they actually bought their self delusion that Ukraine with their support was going to defeat Russia and drive them out...are they stupid or just idiots.

I would be afraid they will make the same mistake with China and get embarrassed...American does not know that the world as changed...this is not the old days...they are playing with fire if they think they can do Iraq or Afghanistan type operation with these big countries...SAD.

Does the DOD also have "leeway" to continue the graft, er, "economic assistance," without congressional approval?

They should just declare an emergency, and just transfer what's left of American's 401k's to Ukraine with an IOU of course.

$6 billion error? I thought the total spend was over $120 billion, all of which is an error.

The Russ are a little more reliable on reporting losses than Ukr…not reliable mind you, more reliable.

They claim Ukr has lost 70,000 offensive troops (their best) dead or seriously wounded and 700 armored vehicles destroyed this summer alone.

For all that they cracked the first line of defense in one spot and got bogged down in the gray area non-man’s land in most of the others.

At what financial cost? That’s isn’t even guessed at.

Replacement cost vs actual cost. Some surplus M113 are selling for $500. They are using the cost of a new vehicle as the value sent.

They may have done this on purpose to pad the accounting.

Would be willing to fund Ukraine for a year if you also defend the DOJ for a year. Can’t have both

House GOP should advise Biden that they will release some funds for his war provided he convinces Zelensky to hire back the Burisma prosecutor Biden had fired and coughs up the five million Burisma paid him forhis work to buy the Z man a few tanks

So the Biden administration overestimates the value of Ukraine military aid and the consequence is more aid to Ukraine.

Trump allegedly overestimated the value of his properties and he gets sued by the State of New York.
