Here's how a government shutdown can impact the quality of life
Channel 3000 News/CNN ^ | September 24, 2023 | CNN Staff

With the government on the brink of a shutdown this week as Congress remains at an impasse on a funding deal, federal departments and agencies have begun the mandatory process of planning to bring nonessential functions to a halt.

Every department and agency has its own set of plans and procedures. That guidance includes information on how many employees would get furloughed, which employees are essential and would work without pay, how long it would take to wind down operations in the hours before a shutdown, and which activities would come to a halt. Those plans can vary from shutdown to shutdown.

Should Congress fail to pass a short-term spending bill to keep the proverbial lights on, a shutdown could have enormous impacts on all Americans, in areas from air travel to clean drinking water.

The nearly 4 million Americans who are federal employees will feel the effect immediately. Essential workers will remain on the job, but others will be furloughed until the shutdown is over. None will be paid during the impasse.

For many of them, a shutdown would strain their finances, as it did during the record 35-day funding lapse in 2018-2019.

“We had thousands of members across the country who returned holiday presents because they needed the cash, missed a mortgage payment, took out short-term loans and ran up their credit card debt because they had no paychecks for a month,” said Doreen Greenwald, president of the National Treasury Employees Union, which represents 150,000 workers in 35 agencies. “They stood in line at food banks, pulled their children from child care, were unable to put gas in their cars and begged creditors for grace. This is not how the United States of America should treat its own employees.”

"On average, members of the American Federation of Government Employees earn between $55,000 and $65,000 a year, while hourly workers earn an average of $45,000 annually. But thousands make closer to $15 an hour, or $31,200 a year."

Oh, Boo-Frickin'-Hoo!

“The White House also warns that approximately 10,000 children across the country ‘would immediately lose access to Head Start’ programs, impacting some of the nation’s youngest citizens.”

So basically, ‘indoctrination’ for little kids would be delayed? How is that a Bad Thing? ;)

Essential workers will remain on the job...

Keep them (assuming they really are 'essential').

Fire all the rest.

“We had thousands of members across the country who returned holiday presents because they needed the cash..."

OMG, this is what they come up with? The FOUR MILLION federal workers needed to reduce Christmas spending a little to make ends meet? Heaven forbid they would EVER have to tighten their belts and have to deal with losing income.

The root cause of all of our problems is "FOUR MILLION."

Pure propaganda to make people think only the government can provide.

And of course, the useful idiots of the democrat party will believe it.

The government of George III was much better than the government we have today. But here we are.

Must be nice to have a job where you basically have to kill someone to get fired and even when the money is suspended for a bit, you get it all back at the end anyway each time.

These people couldn’t last 6 months in the real world.

Agreed. Mother Government isn’t going to harm herself in any way, shape or form. She’ll pass the pain on to ‘We The People’ as always.

If we only had LEADERS that would actually LEAD, we wouldn’t have to deal with any of these Government-made problems.

If they’re non essential functions, then what and who are we paying for?! Cut it! No one will notice or care!

Regardless, the fact is the greatest threat to our country, our freedom, and our wellbeing is none other than the $3+trillion, 80%+ unconstitutional portion of the federal government which needs to be PERMANENTLY SHUT DOWN in order to restore our Free Constitutional Republic.

And that’a a fact, Jack.

During the last shutdown, I remember reading a "sob story" about a family who was worried that they might have to cancel their vacation to Disney World, and might be going to the food bank that weekend. I guess we were all supposed to feel sorry for them. If you are one paycheck away from going to the food bank, maybe you shouldn't be booking a trip to Disney World in the first place.

OTOH, a journeyman Air Traffic Controller, GS-14 working at the LAX tower, or at the ARTCC, in Palmdale, is earning north of 140K/yr.

I guess it has never occurred to Doreen, who is the head of the union of IRS employees, that people all over America have exactly the problems she listed on a daily basis because their taxes are too high.

Many of the people paying her salary actually are unable to afford holiday presents, missing mortgage payments, taking out short-term loans, running up their credit card debt, standing in line at food banks, pulling their children from child care, unable to put gas in their cars, and begging creditors for grace in order that Doreen can live without those stresses.

Hard to have much sympathy for highly paid government employees who are living paycheck to paycheck.

Why can’t Congress pass something earlier so it doesn’t always come down to a government shutdown last minute?

No matter what party is in charge or at fault, Republicans are always blamed and it is always a net negative.

If your company closes and moves to China, your quality of life is impacted far worse but nobody cares about that except Trump.

“the record 35-day funding lapse in 2018-2019.”
My wife worked for the gub-mint then, got tons of personal/church stuff done and after all that, they paid them ALL BACK PAY.
So, how much did the taxpayer save?

Dear all:

While this was just recently published on TGP, the NPR story and judicial opinion are from July 8, 2022. Banning the drop boxes did not prevent the new Dem justice, Janet Protasiewicz, from “winning” a special election to the WI Supreme Court. Sorry for any confusion that this in new news.
