Hyundai and Kia are recalling nearly 3.4 million vehicles in the U.S. and telling owners to park them outside due to the risk of engine compartment fires.
The recalls cover multiple car and SUV models from the 2010 through 2019 model years including Hyundai's Santa Fe SUV and Kia's Sorrento SUV.
Documents posted Wednesday by the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration say the anti-lock brake control module can leak fluid and cause an electrical short, which can touch off a fire while the vehicles are parked or being driven.
The automakers are advising owners to park outdoors and away from structures until repairs are done.
Dealers will replace the anti-lock brake fuse at no cost to owners. Kia says in documents that it will send notification letters to owners starting Nov. 14. For Hyundai the date is Nov. 21.
Hyundai reported 21 fires in the affected vehicles in the U.S., and another 22 "thermal incidents" including smoke, burning and melting of parts, the documents say. Kia reported 10 fires and melting incidents.

Hyundai models covered by the recall include the 2011 to 2015 Elantra, Genesis Coupe, and Sonata Hybrid, the 2012 to 2015 Accent, Azera, and Veloster, the 2013 to 2015 Elantra Coupe and Santa Fe, the 2014 to 2015 Equus, the 2010 to 2012 Veracruz, the 2010 to 2013 Tucson, the 2015 Tucson Fuel Cell, and the 2013 Santa Fe Sport."
Turns out KIA cars come with a complimentary barbeque feature.
I’ve been waiting over 3 months for the part for my 2013 Hyundai Elantra recall , sub-frame or something like that I forget it’s been so long
But….but…only EV cars are a fire risk. Everyone on FR constantly tells me.
The excuse of “Covid supply chain problems” is wearing thin.
The wife’s car is on that list. Should I tell her or not?
“...telling owners to park them outside due to the risk of engine compartment fires.”
At least they didn’t have to pay EV prices for this feature.
“But….but…only EV cars are a fire risk. Everyone on FR constantly tells me.”
I don’t recall a single person saying that.
Maybe the histrionics can be left to children.
Huh?
Reminds me of Ford and their Escape "EcoBoost" small SUV. Poor design of cooling passages leads to a small block crack that lets coolant into the #2 and #3 cylinders. Coolant levels go down quickly.
Ford's fix? Rather than replacing the engine, they give you a free coolant reservoir level alarm. Yes, your car is still blowing coolant into the combustion chambers, fouling your catalytic converter, fouling your O2 sensors, contaminating your engine oil and contaminating your coolant, but at least you can keep tabs on how fast it is all happening. There's a class action lawsuit going on, but it is slower than molasses in January.
If you love her, tell her.
If you've been thinking about a divorce, take out a big life insurance policy on her and sleep with one eye open.
LOL! Are her insurance policies paid up? On her and the car? ;)
Whoever says “only EV cars are a fire risk” would be completely ignorant and wrong, and you would be equally wront to listen to them.
But anyone who states that the percentage of EV cars on the road that catch fire due to an inherent design defect is far, far higher than the percentage of ICE engines on the road that catch fire due to an inherent design defect (not physical damage) would be correct.
“...and urge owners to park outdoors...”
I’m so glad they told me this; here I had been parking my truck in the Living Room all this time! ;)
Exactly. See my post above.
We do have a population of people on FR who are wholly onboard with the EV scam though.
That car has been a bit of a problem. It has taken out three mailboxes in just the last two years or so.
“We do have a population of people on FR who are wholly onboard with the EV scam though.”
We, we do.
Sorento isn’t spelled with two r’s.
Editor’s day off...?
“ We do have a population of people on FR who are wholly onboard with the EV scam though.”
Whether it be Ukraine or EVs (not to mention a few other issues) we have plenty of people (and many trolls) at FR who are very happy to hop in bed with Demented Joe and China Mitch.
I was pleasantly surprised that this was a non EV fire story myself. All the car fires I have read about for years are either battery or BLM/Antifa caused.
