Califoria Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) was exultant Thursday after signing a law to raise wages in fast food restaurants to $20 per hour and to create a new “council” that will govern the industry.
“California is home to more than 500,000 fast-food workers who – for decades – have been fighting for higher wages and better working conditions,” Newsom said in a statement. “Today, we take one step closer to fairer wages, safer and healthier working conditions, and better training by giving hardworking fast-food workers a stronger voice and seat at the table.”
The legislation, the Wall Street Journal reported earlier this month, was the result of months of intimidation by state Democrats against the industry. The Journal noted:
Democrats last year passed a law establishing a state council with open-ended authority to set wages, benefits and working conditions for fast-food shops. Businesses responded, as California law says they can, by qualifying a referendum for the November 2024 ballot to overturn the law.
But in mafia-like fashion, Democrats retaliated and threatened more punishment if fast-food restaurants didn’t drop the referendum. The June state budget revived a long-dormant Industrial Welfare Commission (IWC) with sweeping authority to set wages, hours and working conditions across all industries, not only fast food.
…
The deal Gov. Newsom announced rescinds funding for the state Industrial Welfare Commission and drops the joint-employer liability legislation. The state fast-food council will also be replaced by a board whose authorities are nominally more limited. In return, businesses dropped the referendum.

I make it a habit to research the education of people in charge of telling us what to do with our money. Way beyond their constitutional right to do so
And this one running California into the ground
If the Californians who are now flooding texas because of newsom s abject failure in keeping California solvent ruin texas where will people go tgen?
“He attended kindergarten and first grade at …but eventually transferred out, due to the severe dyslexia that still affects him. It has challenged his abilities to write, spell, read, and WORK WITH NUMBERS.”
Ya
“His father’s finances were strapped in part because of his tendency to give away his earnings.[6] Newsom worked several jobs in high school to help support his family.”
Instead of learning. I never let my kids work while going to school. It is a stupid notion
Like most companies that have 24 hour operations I suspect the first to go will be 3rd shift operations. Myself and the Wife eat Breakfast early (5:30) I go out and pick up Breakfast burritos once a week. I suspect that will be a thing of the past. Fortunately in So Cal we have access to great Chorizo so we will be making our own Burritos a little more often.
Oh. I bring lunch to work
“Has anybody noticed the lack of work ethic in fast food places lately? Lots of kids, acting like kids with NO COMPREHENSION of responsibility.
It’s like a big game to them”
It’s bad at fast food joints, I have learned my lesson and now don’t leave the Parking lot assuming they didn’t forget something in the bag. Even sit down, more upscale places are screwing up a lot on orders.
Like "Horn & Hardart"?
What is considered “fast food”?
Is that limited to take out/ counter service only? Or, does it include sit downs?
IF people like dishwashers and busboys now get $20/hr that is going really hit hard..
Will something like a Waffle house/ Ihop now move to all paper plates and cups? and then generate tons more waste?
A real life version of 10-289 out there being planned?
10 piece chicken nugget meal is $10. Big Mac meal is $12. Couple that with service that royally sucks now and I only get the $.99 iced coffee when the drive thru is empty
The state has taken over the restaurant business in California.
They didn’t all close when the minimum went from $7 to $15; they won’t all close when the minimum goes to $20. They WILL however, demand employees to move their asses or get fired and quit smoking pot behind the trash dumpsters. They WILL adult citizens who will care to keep those jobs for more than three weeks.
Don’t get me wrong folks: I totally believe in the economics of no minimum wage... in a free market. But in a society where the taxpayers pay rent, healthcare, food and even phone bills for employees who don’t make enough to live comfortably on (as long as they don’t get married and any babies are born out of wedlock), and obliterate the immigration laws to keep employers happily fed with an endless stream of people willing to live in complete dependency on the government, let’s not pretend market forces are going to work.
Also... the fries on what was recently called 99-cent menu costs $3.89. in my state which did NOT raise the minimum wage. So let’s not pretend McDonald’s didn’t just massively increase the profit on their food.
Considering obesity is still on the rise in most states, yes they should. And it should have been started years ago.
A few months ago I paid $15 for a sandwich, chips & drink. I said heck with this and have been brown bagging my lunch ever since.
Communists want to run EVERYTHING.
All the fast food restaurants should close in California ASAP

You would almost think
gav has stock in Billy gates’s cricket farms
wouldn’t you.
Can’t imagine where they’d get that idea. /s
Or the staff will now be cut to only be a cook and 2 wait staff trying to wait on 30 people. Customers will end up waiting in line for an hour just to get a happy meal
Yeah that the stupidest of many stupid Turdeau’s moves. 3 largest grocery chains in Canada make a 3.6% profit margin. New taxes will have to be added to the customer’s bill making food even more expensive.
You are so on the wrong website to be preaching Marxism
I honestly dont understand how it is constitutional for the government to even have a minimum wage at the state or federal level.
