GOP rebels, Dems sink House stopgap funding bill less than 48 hours before likely government shutdown

A group of GOP hardliners joined Democrats in sinking House Republicans' stopgap funding bill on Friday, significantly raising the chances of a government shutdown happening over the weekend.

A procedural vote to advance the bill passed earlier in the day, but final passage failed on an 198 to 232 vote. Twenty-one Republicans voted against it, including Reps. Matt Gaetz, R-Fla., Marjorie Taylor Greene, R-Ga., and Nancy Mace, R-S.C., among others.

It's a heavy blow to Speaker Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif., whose leadership has faced public threats throughout the spending battle so far from some in the right flank of his conference.

Federal government funding expires at the end of the day on Sept. 30. If the House and Senate can't strike a deal by then, a partial shutdown threatens to force all federal functions deemed "nonessential" to grind to a halt. A short-term funding extension, known as a continuing resolution (CR), is almost certainly needed to give lawmakers more time to cobble together 12 individual spending bills for fiscal year 2024.

But Republican leaders have had a hard time so far corralling their conference into some kind of agreement. A faction of conservatives have for weeks said they are opposed to any CR, arguing it would be an extension of the previous Democratically-controlled Congress. The House GOP's CR proposal included an amendment to slash spending for its month-long duration to fiscal 2022 levels, about $130 billion less than the current year's. It also featured elements from House Republicans' border security bill, and McCarthy said a new provision would mandate the creation of a bipartisan committee to study the federal debt.

Lol, Notice the Alt Left clown posse is never referred to as “hardliners” in the Fake News. Why? Because they are always good little bots who do exactly what their political masters tell them to do.

All 12 should have been ready weeks ago and been passed by the House.

Yep, they have 12 bills they want voted on. Political establishment in both parities doesn’t want to vote since voting might require them to actually stand for something. Since the 1990s they pass these CRs to avoid having to actuary have a budget

There should be standard operating budgets that need only be updated by dollar amounts.

They would keep most of the government up and running.

Non-recurring items can be funded by supplemental bills.

They’ve had 9 months.

Instead they wasted the time getting hair cuts and makeup and new suits to go on Fox News 3 times a day.

Nope.

Had the House passed McCarthy’s bill the Senate would have voted it down. The it could be portrayed as a bipartisan shutdown.

As it is Republicans will shoulder the blame. And there WILL be blame.

“Do the Republicans even have a budget plan?”

I think a better question would be; “Do the Republicans even have a any plan?”

“Don’t cut me bro” is the Cris de cour used by our RINO whims in Texas when forced to vote in public on something their constituents will hate.

I won't do the research (since I'm pretty sure what it would say, and I'm lazy), but this means that 198 Republicans voted for the CR (to continue the gov't), and 201 Democrats (and Independents) voted nay (to shut it down).

If anyone tries to pin the shutdown on Republicans, this fact should be the first words out of your mouth in response.

The Republicans can't agree on what needs to be cut, so instead the Tantrum Caucus Freedom Caucus is just going to shut everything down.

“All 12 should have been ready weeks ago and been passed by the House.”

McCarthy promised no more CRs and no more omnibus bills. He also promised to release all the J6 tapes.

He’s done none of them. Time to file the Motion to Vacate.
