The lesson we should take from history is from our first president, when he told us to stay out of entangling alliances. Wise man, that Washington.
Europe is NOT our problem. The feckless Euros have never played well in the sandbox together, and when they can’t get along they call on the US to rescue them, time and time and time again. I’m for dissolving NATO and all other alliances and really being America first. Keep the sea lines of communication open for trade that is in our interest, close the border, and let the rest of the world muddle along, if they can. IT IS NOT OUR PROBLEM!

Back then, that was probably a wise suggestion. But, the world is quite different now. Washington would not be making such a suggestion now, because it would sound very naive.
We could quit NATO and all other alliances. But, how do we get a guarantee that there will not be any hostile nations looking to get advantage or take advantage of our peaceful gestures. Would China leave us alone. Would Russia turn pacifist? Would Iran and the Muslim countries finally decide to leave Israel alone and would they also decide to not try to spread their religion by force?
Washington may have been a very wise man, but it's doubtful he would be thought of as so wise in today's world if he were to say the same things.

George Washington is the best known and the original American Isolationist.
His followers today are the new breed, the neo isolationists who lack the vision to see beyond their own county lines.
Washington’s contemporaries were men of the world
