North Dakota state senator Doug Larsen, his wife and their two young children died when the small plane they were traveling in crashed in Utah, a Senate leader said Monday, according to The Associated Press.
Larsen’s death was confirmed in an email that Republican Senate Majority Leader David Hogue sent to his fellow senators and was obtained by AP.
The plane crashed on Sunday evening shortly after taking off from Canyonlands Airfield about 15 miles north of Moab, according to a Grand County Sheriff’s Department statement posted on Facebook. The sheriff’s office said all four people on board the plane were killed.
“Senator Doug Larsen, his wife Amy, and their two young children died in a plane crash last evening in Utah,” Hogue wrote in his email, according to AP. “They were visiting family in Scottsdale and returning home. They stopped to refuel in Utah.”

The aircraft had landed to refuel and taken back off afterwards - could be a fuel issue, fuel system issue, or a weight-and-balance issue. My wild stab in the dark is a weight and balance issue that allowed the craft to get airborne but then brought it down once there.

Looking at that pic I’m leaning toward health event. The cabin is intact and doesn’t look like the belly flop should have killed anyone. And the Piper Cherokee has a great stall characteristic. Just turn loose and it will fly straight and level. Guess we at least need radio call dope?
