Matt Gaetz on Tuesday night angrily denied that he had worked to unseat Kevin McCarthy in revenge for McCarthy failing to protect him.
Gaetz, 41, is facing a House Committee inquiry into allegations of sexual misconduct, use of illegal drugs, and misuse of funds.
Gaetz has argued that the two-year, wide-ranging inquiry into his conduct is the work of McCarthy and his allies, who he argues are bent on smearing him.
A parallel investigation by the Justice Department into allegations of sex trafficking and sex with a minor was dropped in February, when prosecutors concluded they did not have enough evidence to bring charges.
McCarthy on Monday insisted once again he could not block the investigation into Gaetz: on Tuesday, after he was ousted, McCarthy said it was because Gaetz had a personal dislike of him.
Gaetz on Tuesday said that was 'an urban legend', and angrily denied moving against McCarthy as revenge for McCarthy failing to block the ethics investigation.

I think McCarthy would bend over backwards (pun intended) for protecting Santos while encouraging fabrication against Gaetz.

This investigation dates back to 2021 (prior to the Rs winning the House and McCarthy becoming speaker):
There were matters preceding this investigation. But, given the guy’s brash style, the prior matters, and the current matters also, might simply be grist for the mill.
I never trusted Gaetz, but I trust the accusers against him less.
It’s hypocrisy in action that there hasn’t been nearly the scrutiny for the Biden Family Syndicate that they had with the false allegations against Matt Gaetz. It is typical of the Marxist fools who throw truth to the wind in order to kill the MAGA movement.
We must know that there is an agenda to grind America down.
All I know is that the President Pro Tempore of the Senate is now second in line to the Presidency - since the Speaker has now been vacated. If anyone here knows who that is, then there should be a small sense of panic when the nationwide emergency alert goes off tomorrow. 😜
