The dead in Israel are closing in on a thousand now, or the equivalent, proportionately, of ten 9/11s. John Podhoretz sums up Saturday October 7th this way:

I don’t think it minimizes the trauma of the loss of 3,000 lives to note that if we had lost 30,000 then even many, many more hearts would be broken and lives changes forever.

I knew and had met 2 people who died on 9/11 airplanes and another who barely escaped the debris when the twin towers fell. I suspect this was true for many of us who had resided in DC or NYC.

I do not know anyone who died in Israel but this hits just as hard as 9/11. In both cases nazi fascists murdered civilians simply because of their nationality. They will not prevail.

If the average person has interactions with 1,000 people, 10% of the Israeli population knows someone who was killed. That's 10% of the nation has been punched in the gut and is ready for retribution. Practically everyone in Israel by has heard from someone who knows someone who has suffered a loss. The whole country is psychologically prepared for "an eye for an eye".

The Vatican? Maybe they'd just continue to turn the other cheek.
